Why are sodas bad?
Good question David, and I too would like to know the answer. I'm only 9 weeks out from my RNY, and loved diet coke (mind you, I liked drinking WITH my meals, which is a big no-no). I've heard mixed stories. Some say that the carbonation stretches the pouch, but others say that is a myth. Others talk about the evils of aspartame, but that's in many things we eat. I understand that caffeine is not good for us, but I'd be happy with de-caf diet pop. Will be interested in hearing what people think.
There is something about the diet sugar substitutes that makes you crave more sweet stuff. I don't remember the exact process but that alone made me stop, well that and the horrid feeling when I tried to drink it once after a year or so. I used to drink at least a 6 pack of diet Sprite everyday and I can honestly say I don't really miss it after 5 years. To me it just starts a whole series of temptations that I've decided to leave out of my new life. It leads us to go back to old habits and eating systems that got us fat in the first place.
No I don't think they stretch the stomach but they aren't good for us either, full of chemicals and fake food. I try to go for quality foods now but that's just me. You could do worse than diet Coke but plain old water does you better.
I've heard so many different thiings. One was the sweetener effects that were already posted, while others say that the bubbles may stretch your pouch. At the very least, you may feel a little uncomfortable with the carbonation.

I went back to Diet Coke after the second year. It does not stretch the pouch, It does not give me cravings for sweets, and the caffeine helps me stay awake when I am working until 1:00 AM, I don't drink coffee or tea or alcohol. I drink one vending machine bottle a few times a week. If diet sodas are not hurting or making you uncomfortable, they are not that big a deal.
I concentrate on giving up the things that are really bad. A Zero calorie Coke Zero is not going to make me gain weight and I enjoy drinking it. They can be addictive, so I don't keep them in the house. Just get one from the machine at work or pick one up at a store sometimes.
Good question. I'm not a soda drinker but I get together frequently with an old friend who had WLS 8 years ago and maintains a 140 lb loss. She looks fantastic. And she drinks real coke like it was going to save her life. She doesn't know why she is as heavy drinker of it as she is either. Her sister just had WLS a year ago and is doing well though not yet at goal. She is following her sister's example though and while not as bad about it, she does drink a few diet cokes a week. Neither of them have any problems and while my friend is obviously doing well even though she drinks coke, she would rather not but feels more concerned about her sister doing the same thing (and with good reason since she's only a year out).
In the beginning, the carbonation would hurt my stomach. Now I can drink a few a week. I buy a bottled one and it lasts me 2 days, I just take lil sips of it. When you are a few years out, I don't see anything wrong with it. What is bad....every once in a while I drink diet coke and a splash of whipped cream vodka. Pretty tasty!! (I know... I'm a bad influence)
