I haven't had surgery yet so can't speak to that, but there are tons of older posts on Protein shakes. The Syntrax Mint Cookie one seems to be super popular along with pretty much all of their other shakes really.

I can't help you with the protein shakes, as I never really did them.  But, keep in mind that your taste buds might change after surgery, so what you like now might taste like ass later.

My surgeon keeps all his patients in the hospital for 4 days.  I never used the pain pump once I left recovery.  I never had any pain.  Let me repeat that - I never had any pain.  In fact, I thought my surgeon just cut me a little bit to scam the insurance company (I made him show me my surgical reports and pictures of my new stomach to prove that he actually did the surgery).  I walked 2 miles a day while I was in the hospital (not all at once, but around and around the unit several times a day).

I had surgery on a Friday, was released from the hospital on Monday, and started back at work the following Thursday.  I was out of work for a total of 6 days.  I have a low-stress, casual desk job, where I can leave to go home any time I needed, and I live only 1.8 miles from work.  I was EXHAUSTED every day, but I had no problems doing my work, getting around, getting my water in, or eating my food.

After being a member here for a while, I realize that I may not be the norm.  But, it can happen.

Good luck to you!

No pain for me and so no narcotics after recovery either.   Was up walking the tbe halls the day of and barely stopped until I was discharged the day after.  Went home and cared for my 11 month old son as my husband was working!   It was a breeze ...

Can't help on the protein shakes as I have never touched them or bars - prefer to eat as cleanly (the less processing and chemicals the better) as possible.

Good luck - hope you have as easy a time as I had!

Amanda,

I am 11 weeks s/p RNY.  Had PCA in hospital and took pain meds for about 7 days after DC.  I used and still do GNC 100 Whey protein, cookies and cream, chocolate peanut butter, chocolate, & sugar cookie flavors.  Mix with H2O and each serving has roughly 24gm protein and 130kcal.

Best of luck, it is the best decision of my life.  It's not easy, it is a new lifestyle.

OK - not sugar coating....

I had open and I had a fair amount of pain for the first couple of days - then went to NAUSEA.  I needed anti-nausea meds for about 2 weeks.   I was really tired for about 4 weeks.  Then things got better. My energy level returned to pre surgery levels (but not extra energy).  I did best by resting a lot - keeping up with anti-nausea meds and just trying to get in enough protein and water. EVERYONE is different but you may experience some problems.  IT is ok...it will pass and things will get better. Best of luck with your surgery.

I was in the hospital for 2 1/2 days. My only pain was from the gas and that was while I was in the hospital.  WALK as much as you can in the hospital to move that gas and you will be happy as can be when it "moves".  Other then that, no pain at all.  I was home 9  days and went back to work with 1/2 days for a few days.

My biggest problem was constipation, but I think I've got it beat and am doing great now.  Be prepared to take your time learning to eat new foods to see if your stomach can tolerate them. DON"T ru**** or you'll regret it - either with vomiting or dumping or pain.

as for the protein shakes, Find a flavor you like but don't buy more then you can drink before surgery because after your tastes might change.

What to bring to the hospital - not much! I didn't use hardly anything while I was there. You can wear your clothes home that you wore to the hospital Bring slippers and basic toiletries.

I had a hard time finding a protein shake that I liked.  I use the Premier Protein sold at Sams and Costco and now in some grocery stores.  I'm 8 months out and still have one every day for breakfast.

As far as recovery, I did have some pain but nothing I couldn't handle.  I was almost 60 when I had my surgery so probably had a longer recovery.  Took two weeks off work and would have liked another week.  The first few weeks are challenging, learning what you can eat and what you can do but it goes by fast.  Soon you will start seeing the loss, your clothes won't fit anymore, you'll be able to do more and you'll feel fantastic.

Take to the hospital:  your cell phone charger, slippers good for walking, chapstick.  I took my computer and sent it back home, I really didn't feel like using it.  Don't bother with a robe, with the IV you won't be able to wear it anyway.  You can wear a hospital gown backwards as a robe.

Nervous is normal...............good luck to you.

Two weeks out here, I would say yes, expect pain that first eight hours, a good deal, but nothing you won't survive. Wear something comfy and easy to put on. Move your legs and shift as much as you can when you wake up. Ask for ice chips. Walk as soon as you can. It took about 3 days before I could sleep on my right side and about ten days before I could sleep on my left. Made me real mad. People will tell you to buy this and that as far as protein shakes but it does zero good if you can't stomach it. I took advice I'd read and bought vanilla protein powder so I could flavor it. I also bought sugar free caramel macchiato coffee creamer and added that, a little splenda and lactose free milk and it tasted like a milkshake to me, ymmv but buying vanilla and adding sugar free creamer or syrups are a good idea I think. Good luck! You will be fine. You really will. You've made a smart decision.

**Spoiler Alert**  I had problems with my RNY but I am still happy I did this!

I had surgery 6/10.  The day of and the day after I had minimal discomfort.  I walked regularly through out the day.  The second day I was in a lot of pain.  I did not think much of it, figured I just walked too much the day before and was paying for it now.  I had a problem with the nerves from mid stomach to my left side that made my skin feel like it was burned and the "left" incision was extra touchy.  After 2 months it has dulled down to almost nothing.  I was out of work for 4 weeks due to the nerve pain.

As far as the protein goes I started off with Unjury.  After a few days I could not stomach it any more.  I tried different flavors and nothing helped.  The smell would set me off.  I ended up going to Sam/Costo Premier Protein shakes and did so much better.   I keep them around still for days I need a little extra help with protein.  I also made Jell-o so I could get some "chewing" satisfaction.  You can add some unflavored protein powder to it if it agrees with you.
