Questions about vitamin D

when I first saw my surgeon she did blood work and I have a vitamin d deficiency so I was prescribed vitamin d, the prescription is for 50,000 iu  or 1.5 MG of d2 but I'am sure that my deficiency was d3. I was reading an article that said that d2 and d3 are not interchangeable but others say they are. I have finished the prescription but I'm worried that surgery will be delayed if it was the wrong vitamin d because they wanted me to get my levels up because they were really low. anyone have any experience with this?

That prescription won't do you much good. D2 has to be converted to D3 in the body, and you will get very little D3 from D2. And it is packed in oil, which is also not absorbed well.

You need D3, which is not available by prescription. You need a dry form, not in oil. most people seem to need 10,000 D3 per day, but if you are deficient, you probably need more for a while.

The OP is pre-op, in which case vitamin D3 in oil will be absorbed fine.  It's a fat soluble vitamin, so people with "normal" digestive systems absorb it well in oil.

Actually as a pre-op, she can use the oil based.

And 10,000 per day is NOTHING! That's like spitting in the wind for a post op.

To the OP: The prescription MIGHT help pre-op...I was taking 50,000 IU a week in an oil based from 2007 to Dec 2010 and only managed to raise mine from NOT showing on the test to a 15.

Now, I take the 50,000 DRY D3 every day with 100,000 IU on weekends...and my level is up around 100, EXACTLY where I want it. Some need 100,000 IU daily, some even 150,000 IU daily and still have low vitamin D levels. Each of us is different.

So while the oil based will work pre-op, you might get better and faster results using the dry D3 by Biotech that Vitalady carries.

I'll tell you what the nut will say...she will FREAK out over the amount. And tell you that the prescription works JUST fine.

I ignore the nut at my surgeon's office...I take what I need to keep me in the upper range of normal. Normal range is 30-100.

D3 is the natural form of vitamin D your body makes from exposure to sunlight.  D2 is a synthetic form that your body must turn into D3.  It takes a lot of D2 to make a little D3.  When they test your vitamin D level (vitamin D 25 hydroxy) they are looking at your total vitamin D level.  You don't have a D2 deficiency or a D3 deficiency, you just have a vitamin D deficiency.

What was your vitamin D level?  The best way to bring it up (and research shows it needs to be at least 80 for optimal health, although many docs will say it's OK much lower than that) is to take D3,  D3 is not available by prescription, you just get it over the counter.

Personally, I would order the 50,000 IU D3 from vitalady.com and take those instead.
