You don't say which surgery you had and that might make a difference.

if you are eating under 500 calories a day and gaining weight, there has to be another cause, it is simply not possilble for that to happen without a contributing factor. Your resting body metabolic rate (the calories you use simply by being alive) is much higher than that.

You need to discuss this with a doctor and/or a nutritionist.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

How are you getting the 500 calorie a day figure?  Are you using "my fitness pal"?  If you're not actually logging, then I would humbly suggest you start there.  Log everything and anything that crosses your lips for two weeks.  It's a fact that people underestimate their calories even when logging. Perhaps you're eating more than you realize.  If not, you need to see your dr.  There's something metabolically wrong.

Ditto from those above. You will not gain weight on 500 calories a day. You are eating much more than you think you are.

I agree with Grim... You are likely eating more than you think you are.  Are you measuring your portions out?  If you are looking at your portion sizes and "guessing" at the actually amount you need to stop.  You should take a week and actually MEASURE your food and then calculate the calories.  Those of us who have suffered from obesity have a skewed view of what a proper portion looks like.  If we knew how to eat the proper portion... we would not have needed to have surgery.
