I am 4 years POST OP Roux en Y gastic bypass. I have lost 8 dress sizes...... having lost 53 kgs....a very successful patient and thrilled with my results (I now weight 49 kgs). Probably about 7/8 months after my op I noticed that from time to time I would experience quite severe HEART PULPITATIOS.....it's progressively got worse in the past 2 years..... I have NEVER (even pre-op) been diagnosed with ANY heart conditions, no diabetes, no cholesterol etc.....I have my regular blood tests (all fine) and even seen a cardiologist specialist who claims my heart is fine!

I do not smoke, no drink....I lead a very calm and relaxed life style so am NOT stressed. I had a bad episode 2 days ago and the lady in the pharmacy took my BP and heart rate.....a normal heart rate is between 60 - 100 and my reading was 174!! Extremely high and very worrying.

I want to know if anyone POST OP has experienced anything like this...(heart pulpitations, dizziness)...I NEVER had this problem before the op..... I have started a beta blocker - named Bilocor 5mg.....I am 45 years old ....I wish someone could give me some answers ...can anyone help or give advice? Thanks Paula

How are your labs? Post op you can become low in some vitamins like potassium that affect your heart. Very dangerous for some of our vitamin levels to get out of whack.

You need to get THOROUGH labs drawn, and what I mean by thorough is comprehensive labs for post bariatric patients. If you didn't have something close to 20 vials drawn, you are not getting them all.

Vitalady has a list of the labs we need if your Dr's list is lacking. You should have this done ASAP, as it can be dangerous.

If one cardiologist says everything's OK and you (obviously) feel otherwise, it may be time for a second opinion from a different cardiologist. You may also want to follow up with your original surgeon as well.

If the episodes happen suddenly, they have a test where you wear a heart monitor for 24 or 48 hours and it can catch any weirdness that may happen, so perhaps something like that would be useful. A new doctor may also have other ideas as well.

Having been through the same issue that turned in superventricular tachycardia which had to be addressed surgically, i would not recommend waiting for it to resolve on its own. I went from having palpitations to being in the ER with a heart rate of over 200 bpm, twice in two weeks.

You don't mention what tests, if any, your cardiologist has performed, but it sounds like you really, really need to either have him/her do some in-depth testing done or find another specialist.

The only time I have heart palpitations is after eating something with too much sugar.  Never checked how high it really was though.  My boyfriends Aunt just went through something very similiar and it turns out it was her thyroid causing the issues, have you had that tested?

Hi Paula, I am 7 mths post op gastric bypass and what you are describing sounds like me when I have severe dumping syndrome. Are you sure that it is not that? I know you would have had dumping before but is it possible you are eating something different that causes this feeling. Also, does it go away after an hour or two. This would no doubt point towards dumping.
