Tailbone pain - would physical therapy help?

Like many others here, I have pretty ridiculous pain from my tailbone. I've had it for months but lately it seems to be even more problematic. It's getting so bad that sitting for half an hour is agony. I get up and walk or stand as much as I can in my desk job, but sometimes, you just have to sit! Meetings, movies, road trips, whatever. I have ****yx pillows at home, at work, and in my car, but sometimes they just don't cut it. I'm getting pretty frustrated and fed up.

Has anyone ever gotten any insight or help on this from their doctor? I'm wondering if some sort of physical therapy might help? I'm really at my wit's end!

When I lost over 200 pounds and had PS my surgeon didn't put any junk in the truck so to speak.  When I sat or worked out it was bone on hardness.  OUCH!  I found padded shorts really helped me.

Sometimes our posture and gait go out of whack when we lose a lot of weight and things redistribute themselves. To that end, a physical therapist might be able to watch you walk/sit/stand and see if there's anything you can do to strengthen particular muscles.

If it's just the fact that your tailbone pokes way the heck out (like mine!), then it's just a wait-and-see game to let it get used to being sat on. I had tailbone problems starting at maybe 3 months, but by month 7-i****hink it was better and I don't need a butt pillow anymore.

A physical therapist could help. I'd suggest seeing an orthopedist first for a prescription!

My story was similar to Julie... had pain regularly from a few months out ....that lasted for about 6 months. I think over time I must have readjusted how I sit...

I've broken my tailbone many times and had PT for it within the past 5 years. I did find the PT helpful but the pain never fully went away with PT alone. I think time is what eventually made it feel better 

I'm 4 months post-op and have that familiar tailbone pain again. This time I've opted to let it run it's course while staying as comfortable as possible. The PT for tailbone was awkward to say the least.

My tail bone along with my spine were out of alignment.  My extra weight compensated for the misalignment.  I seen the curve of my spine on the x-ray before the doctor pointed it out.  When the weight was gone, I would have trouble sitting or going from sitting to standing.  I have seen a chiropractor and after 7 visits no more pain.  I can tell that I'm sitting and walking different.  I no longer have a twist to my walk.

I still use a tailbone pillow but chiropractice adjustments really helped me during the weight-loss phase to get everything back into proper alignment.  PT can help you with exercises to strengthen your hips, thighs and lower back muscles too.  

For most of us former fatties, we weren't ever in very good shape and our muscles are very loose and flabby.  As we shrink the tendons and ligaments that got all stretched take time to tighten back up.  And the muscles definitely have to be worked.

Are you sure you dont have a pilonidal cyst?  When I got one the first time, it felt like I had disclocated something in my tailbone/back.

I found once I'd lost my fat cushion, my tailbone got more contact.  I started clenching my buttcheeks as I sat to provide for the cushion.
