Can't have Anti-Inflammatories after RNY -- What about Green Lipped Mussel?

I had the RNY 11 years ago. I have not touched aspirin or anti-inflammatories since I had the surgery.

My older dog was suffering badly from arthritis. His vet, not really wanting him to go on anti-inflammatories forever, suggested a supplement that contained GREEN LIPPED MUSSEL, which is a natural anti-inflammatory, as well as glucosamine and condroiton (please forgive my spelling if needed). My old dog is now acting like a puppy -- unbelievable!!

I suffer from arthritis, etc., and have to take more pain pills than I'm happy about. I searched the internet and found human versions of supplements of GLM. Does anyone know about these products, and is it safe to take in place of regular anti-inflammatories after a Roux-NY? Anyone with real knowledge or experience of this?

I dug up some science, and found this info from the U of Michigan. Some double-blind studies out of New Zealand have shown a benefit, and that's some solid research.

On the flip side, a European study showed that Green Lipped Mussel can't be connected to an improvement in normal (non-arthritic) bones and muscles, since this research was limited only to people with arthritis. But I think that for your situation, that doesn't mean much.

I'm not sure about it's effectiveness versus NSAIDS or anti-inflammatories, but as long as the supplements aren't ridiculously expensive and don't have any interactions with meds you're currently taking (check with your pharmacist), this seems like a case of "couldn't hurt to try."

Obvious disclaimer: I'm a nerd, not a scientist or doctor. If in doubt, ask someone with an MD :)

Have you tried turmeric or its active ingredient, curcumin?

No, I haven't tried turmeric -- but they advertise it along with the green lipped mussel.

Now I'm trying to find out if I will have a problem absorbing capsules rather than tablets...
