Fluids

Hello everyone,

I had a terrible experience with my gastric bypass but I am better now and I'm 4 months post op. Surgery weight was 248 and today I'm 180. I'm wondering if anyone is having issues like me:

I can't drink water or any kind of juice diet or not. Can have Chai tea black and only maybe 10ounces. I don't think I eat more than 30 ounces of food a day. I can't have any milk or I end up in the bathroom - expected. I can't have water...makes me throw up. To get fluids in I eat a lot of watermelon. On occasion I have eaten steamed fish with spinach (maybe two bites) but I notice what I can eat today I can't eat the next, I throw up.

My hair was about 18 inches long and today I have a boy cut that everyone says looks fabulous because my hair was just falling out - also expected due to rapid weight loss. The one thing I can tolerate NOW that I never drank before is gingerale- takes about 3 days to finish a can and it relieves a lot of my abdominal pain. I also on occasion drink nutrament because of not being able to eat and after a couple days it sends me to the bathroom.

You need to contact your surgeon ASAP.  If you are only able to drink 10oz a day you are going to be in serious trouble.  At 4 months out you should be able to drink at least 64oz of fluid in not more.

You will lose hair due to being under anesthesia not from the rapid weight loss, but if it is just falling out the lack of protein most likely is adding to the problem.

If you don't start getting fluids and protein in you will end up dehydrated and with deficiencies.

Please call your doctor to be seen.

I did see the surgeon and he gave me Prevacid said I might have an ulcer...funny thing is I couldn't drink enough to get the pill down. He gave me 90 days supply and I think I have had maybe 4 in the last month.

I have had my nutrient levels check and my only deficiency is iron but I'm anemic.

I hate to say it, but you need a better surgeon.

If he thought you had an ulcer he should be having you scoped to verify it and start you on treatment.  Not being able to take the prescribed pills is not good.  Something is going on and if it is not corrected will only get worse.

I actually agree with you. But the surgeon has already done the damage. When I went to see him about the fluid issue he ask me if I was still taking the Prevacid -which he had never gaven me : ( prior. Then he said, "oh you should have been taken it since after the surgery...I was at a lost for words.

I'm going to see my family doctor today so he can run another set of blood work to check my nutrient levels.

I'm having a lot of trouble with food because I can't  eat chicken legs, thighs, beef and pork. I can only eat minced beef and pork. I can also eat and tolerate chicken wings but only NOT the leg part of the chicken wing. So basically only meat that is not hard to chew/mince. I had a table spoon of rice yesterday for the first time since my surgery and I had it with sardine.

Will see what the blood test shows after my visit.

You need to be persistent in your efforts to find a resolution with your dr. Don't just assume what he will say. Explain to him that you can not take the pills. You can chew pepcid complete and it can help with heart burn but if you have an ulcer untreated ... You can die! You can absolutely perforate your stomach and bleed to death or get septic from the ulcer eating a hole all the way through. Your gonna have to insist you be seen, diagnosed and treated .

Thank you. I will definitely call and follow up. I just tried the sardine and rice and instead of gingerale I had water. I threw up the water! ð??"

Well I took a bite and then chewed and swollowed. Then took a sip a water and started feeling nauseous and tried breathing and calming myself but the pain was just so bad I had to run to the bathroom.

When ever I throw up I'm unusually sick and out of it for two days. : (

I'm going to try and fill in my pre-op info.

Number one rule to follow .... No drinking for 30 minutes to an hour after you eat, no wonder you threw up, you can't do that. Are you chewing your food up good and taking tiny bites ? Your water prob came back up Bc your food was sitting in your tiny little pouch waiting on digestion to begin and you topped it off with drink .
