Is surgery for me? Severe nut allergies

SassyGirlTN

I'm in the first stages of prepping for a surgery in 6 months and I want it to work, but the thing that worries me is a lot of the protein shakes/protein powders, including unjury, have a warning about allergens. Am I going to prep for nothing? I told my doctor about my allergy and they didn't seem concerned, but I can't risk severe reactions to my protein either. Does anyone know of a brand that is safe?

Thanks in advance!

Right after surgery, I concentrated on broth and liquids. Sugar free jello, sugar free popsicles, broth, water, ice chips--none of those have nuts in them. Once I was able to eat, I chose fish and other things that were easy on my stomach. I drink Premiere protein drinks--I'm not sure if they have an allergen warning on them or not. Just remember that right after your surgery you need to concentrate on staying hydrated. It's not going to kill you if you don't get all your protein in at first. You can work up to it. 30 grams protein by 30 days out, 60 grams protein by 60 days out, 90 grams protein by 90 days out. You can also google allergen safe protein powders and drinks and see what comes up. Your doctor or nutritionist may even have some suggestions about what kind of protein powders are safe. I don't know if surgery is right for you, but it was one of the best things I've ever done for myself. I regret not doing it sooner.

There are several protein powders on the market that are made from brown rice, hemp, egg and pea proteins. There is also bone broth protein powder that claims to be nut free. Since your allergy is severe, I would discuss the different types with your Allergist/PCP to come up with one that you both feel is safe.

I won 2nd place on the OH Giveaway and now use Orgain plant based protein shakes, completely nut free. They are also available at Costco and GNC.

I suggest you look a premier protein. only allergy warning Ive seen is that it contains milk. you should just look at the ingredient list to see if there is anything objectionable for you.

I just started on Premier a week ago and so far so good. My main concern is the all liquid diet 2 weeks prior to surgery. I know, through internet research, that unjury protein powder has an allergen warning, as well as Barilife. I was hoping to find an alternative.

If the Premier protein is working for you, just stick with it. The only reason you would need a protein powder is if you a) want to make your own shakes, or b) want to stir it into other things. Lots and lots of people just use the premade drinks like Premier and never use powders.

EDITED TO ADD: I used Isopure Zero Carb powder, and sure enough, it says this on the label: This product is produced in a facility with soy, dairy, egg and wheat ingredients, peanuts and tree nuts.

many ppl have wls and never use protein powder. They get their protein from real food from the get go. Itos possible to do it this way bitmay take a bit more effort on your part

Thank you!!! I did it.

OP, if you have a severe nut allergy why not put together a liquid/soft food diet that doesn't put you in jeopardy?

Protein shakes are not absolutely necessary and certainly if there is any chance of causing anaphylaxis. I've never drunk a protein shake or eaten a protein bar and I'm perfectly healthy.

I don't know if your centre requires you to be on Optifast leading up to the surgery, but I am pretty sure it's nut-free. The ingredient label only lists soy and milk as allergens, and I've read elsewhere it's gluten (which I care about) and nut free.

I'm not sure if you will feel this is helpful or not, but the clinic I went through does not want us using any protein shakes after surgery. I did not even touch protein shakes until over a year out and that was more for convenience (traveling) and because I like them (maybe too much some days). So it is entirely possible to avoid them all together if you are concerned.

We did do a pre-op liquid meal replacement, but nothing post-op. They wanted all protein from real food sources. We did a week of clear fluids, three weeks of full fluids, and then soft foods. They weren't concerned about the protein levels until the soft food stage, although we could start adding things like Greek yogurt in the full fluids stage.
