I am 9 mos post and my hair is less than sparse. The texture is like dry threads! Anyone out there that can relate?

Totally normal. Google "telogen effluvium" and search the forums for hair loss.

It'll grow back.

Thank you so very much for your reply. Naturally, I have read a multiple of post on the subject; including the 3 stages of hair loss. Niacin and zinc supplements seem to be a common reply. I am 9 mos our and I just need reassurance that my hair will return. But when? It was gotten progressively worse on the past 5 mos. The few strands I have, feel like sewing thread. Won't even curl. ??

I hope you aren't taking niacin for your hair loss and that you really meant biotin.

If you fall down you just have to get back up.

Hair loss and dry texture can be due to so many things.

Post surgery is one - as Gwen mentioned, and nothing can be done to prevent that. It if that is the only reason the hair is bad - it will improve with time.

But there are so many others - low thyroid, low iron, zinc, low proteins, low fat, low level vit B's and a few more. Make sure you get tested for deficiencies. Some can be tested for.

When I see my hair and nails get worse with time - I increase biotin, start eating jello again (it has collagen - essential for hair, skin and nails, - but I don't count it as proteins) and make sure I get enough good fat like avocado, nuts, olives or Olive oil. You don't need a lot of it but day after day - 1/2 acocado or day makes a difference for me.

Yes, someone did say take niacin. I will stop immediately. Jello...huh. Never thought about that but makes good sense. Thank you for all other insight, recommendations and inspiration!

Have you had your blood work done since surgery? How much protein are you getting in your diet? Have you spoken to your surgeon about this?

I have been consuming 120 gm of whey protein powder shakes daily. Too little?

It shouldn't be - although at 9 months out, why are you getting so much of your protein from shakes?

While I never thought I would EVER speak such words; following "to the t" my diet program resulted in excessive weight loss! In essence, I was losing too much too fast. The shakes are a supplement to (at this time) to 12oz of meal protein daily. I also must give myself B12 injections EOW. Double up in Multi and continue on calcium citrate, D3, C, B12 sublingual, B complex, potassium, niacin, biotin, iron celate, copper, and probiotic.
