Fasting?

Hello All,

Before surgery, I would fast one day a week for religious reasons. I'm wondering if it would be okay to incorporate that back into my life. Would it be alright, do you think, if I do it on a day where I limit my activity and increase my water intake? Thoughts on why or why not? Does anyone else here fast semi-regularly?

of course, I'll check with my doc and TD, just wanted to get some personal thoughts first.

It depends on your calorie intake, vitamin levels, and how longs it?s been since surgery. I really wouldn?t recommend it for the first 6to 12 months out of surgery. Contacting your doctor is a good idea

Mmm. Yeah I wasn't sure if it was a good idea at 6monthe out either. Maybe I'll just wait it out a bit more

I'm curious what the veterans might say. I'm 7+ months post-WLS and think your fasting should be fine but of course you'll need to run it by your surgeon as s/he would best be able to guide you.

I am almost 9 years out. I would be unable to fast for a day because of hypoglycemia.

Could you drink protein shakes on fasting days? Your body needs protein and is still healing, so I'd be concerned about that. You can drink it seems like - but I don't know if a protein shake would violate religious restrictions.

Definitely talk to your doc, as you've said. Can you also talk to your religious leader about your situation and see what they advise?

Would it be a 24-hour fast or just a "daytime" fast? Could you still take your vitamins?

Thanks for the advice!

yes, this is more a personal religious gast so I can make the rules in a sense.

I absolutly would still take my vitamins, great question! I'm thinking maybe protein shakes and bone broth for protein intake. Great ideas!

When I was morbidly obese, I had no problem going 24 hours without eating. Now, my blood sugar gets really wonky if I go 5 hours. Just be careful.

Thanks!

yeah blood sugar is definitly something I'm concerned about. Maybe I'll ease into. Cut the intake but still keep up the protein via shakes or something.
