Flintstones vitamins are brought up often around here, since some surgeons recommend them to patients, they're inadequate, etc. This definitely made me laugh today.

Two Flintstones are not adequate. The ASMBS says we need 200% RDA of all vitamins and minerals, and Flintstones don't get you there.

Hmmmm..my blood work always comes out really good. The only thing that was low this last time was Iron so she put me on an Iron Supplement..but, I will call today and ask if that's what they still recommend..

I did have RNY 3 1/2 years ago..maybe its different now..

If it helps at all, I put together a worksheet with the ASMBS recommendations, and I made a comparison to what's in the Flintstones. :)

Is that for Regular Flintstones or Flintstones Complete?

There are apparently three kinds: complete, extra C, and plus iron. I used the "complete" when making these comparisons.

I found out in year 2 and 3 that my doc was not testing some critical for me vitamins and minerals. I used to "give" 4-5 vials of blood to be tested, but if they run as complete as positive labs, they need to take 12-15 vials. And that doesn't include the hormonal labs I need 2 times a year.

There is a chance you are ok, and the rest results are normal, good. But unless you test, you really don't know.

That's not exactly what their website shows? The ASMBS gives a guideline range not a straight 200% across the board. Through the whole PDF only two vitamins had to be at 200% (at least as I said going by their website).

This link has a table on it (Table 6 page 13) that has a breakdown on the vitamins. Now I will say those I know who take Flintstones also take calcium, b12 and iron separately. Going by the chart (especially for sleevers the Flintstones when supplementing calcium, b12 and iron) do actually fall in the ranges. There were only 2 in the whole PDF file that show at 200% requirement and the vitamins meet them. The rest are ranges depending on type of surgery, if you are male/female, and if you menstruate.

Again, I'm only showing what is on their website.
