All I can say as a patient I did research..and made my decision. I think every potential WLS patient has to decide for themselves. I know the study's about which surgery is better for certain types of patients. I thought about it for months and every time it comes back to one thing for ME. I am not a fan of mal-absorption.

I have beautiful blood work and get about 75% of mine at Costco and the rest on Amazon. So you know I pay less for my Vitamins then I did before for my co-pay medications. For all of mine out of pocket is about $35 a month. Not bad when you look at my blood work before and after, everything is high normal now with no other medication except one little water pill that is $5 a month compared to the $90 I was paying a month, worth it on so many levels.

You need to do more research before any surgery and asking people that are living with the different surgery is going to give you a better idea then your Dr office. Look for people that have been doing it successfully for 5-10 years out, see what they do and plan something similar for yourself.

A lot of us do low-carb but I only did really low carb (under 20 a day) while I was actively losing. Are my carbs normal, no but I eat protein first, full fat of anything I want and if room some carbs. My WLS help re-set my body and my mind on how to ate, I'm working hard with a counselor and I am making great choices. I'm over 2 years out and still track everything, WLS isn't a free ride no matter which one you decide to on.

Good Luck

Respectfully, dude, seeing that you "did cheat a lot" is a HUGE red flag for a pre-WLS patient. It is 100% possible to "cheat" after WLS. You keep talking about seeing people who have gained all of their weight back, and it's exactly because they cheated and went off their post-op way of eating.

Yes, the restriction you'll have in the first year will make it HARDER to cheat. But you can still eat total crap. We call them "slider foods," they're carbs that'll go right through your sleeve/pouch. At 5 years post op, I can eat only 4oz of chicken, but I could easily eat most of a tub of movie theatre popcorn if I wanted to.

If you can't get your head in the game now, what's to say you'll magically do it after having surgery?"

well I am a realist and I know I will have slip-ups post op. I am expecting thrm. I am just hoping I can used what I learned in Eating disorder treatment and the years of seeing a therapist that specialized in eating disorders to overcome a slip-up.

If you are not seeing a therapist NOW, I very strongly recommend it. There is a LOT of head work to do, even if you've worked with an eating-disorder specialist in the past, and you will probably face a whole new set of challenges after WLS.

"Respectfully, dude, seeing that you "did cheat a lot" is a HUGE red flag for a pre-WLS patient"

I journal-ed every single thing i ate since entering the bariatric program I am in. That includes the cheating...It was a requirement for me to bring my food journal to every nutrition appointment. They told us if we forgot it twice we would be kicked out of the program. My Nutritionist read every cheat i had. Yet she approved me on Wednesday of last week for surgery. I am truthful..sometimes to a fault. When I had my 3 hour nutrition class the first thing she told all 10 of us was "No ones going to be perfect..You will cheat." She told us it's important to write down everything. Maybe everyone who had WLS on this forum had a way more stricter nutritionist/ WLS team. I only did what they told me to do at Highland Hospital in Rochester NY and they approved me.

Just because your program approves you does not mean you will be successful.

Just because you "can" cheat doesn't mean you should.

Wow, that's a pretty rude response to people that's are trying to be open and honest to help you.

if you take a look at all the threads, you will see that no one here is perfect -- but what we are is honest to ourselves and to our virtual community and part of that honesty is allowing people to call us on our crap when it's needed, identify pitfalls and bad pathways and support us as we try to make those changes.

You're going to do you and make your own choices but don't be surprised if you revisit this conversation in the future and realize there are key things you still need to pull into your approach.

I believe you mentioned you haven't yet met with your surgeon, I recommend you be as candid with your medical team about your thoughts, the feedback and your reactions to it as well.

good luck with your process and please do continue to come here for support.
