Donating a kidney?

Has anyone here donated a kidney or been turned down for donation because of wls? My husband needs one and I'm being assessed. I need to lose a bit more weight as the BMI has to be lower than mine currently is.

I wish I could provide feedback for you, but just popping on to say, good luck and I hope your husband finds a match!

I unfortunately don't have feedback that will be useful. Sending prayers to you and your husband.

Check with the transplant team. If you had the DS or RNY the answer would be no because of the malabsorption. Assume for the sleeve it would need to be a case-by-case basis. Having had the DS, I can't even donate blood.

One of the significant risks with any bariatric surgery is kidney failure or kidney insufficiency over time.

Unfortunately the high protein diets that many bariatric post ops either choose to eat are forced to eat due to conditions like IBF cause kidney damage which , unlike liver damage cannot fix itself.

So giving up a kidney for ANY reason I would say ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Pretty much every health disaster I've ever heard of on here ( very few) involved kidney failure or chronic kidney insufficiency.

Its very nice that you're willing to help your husband but I would say no, not this way. He might end up toting you to renal machine clinics instead of him.

Let someone else donate. Pay if you have to .
