What's the point of bariatric surgery?

Ahhh...so you didn't "just limit your calorie intake to 1500 a day." That's what I thought.

I restricted my calorie intake at 1,500 calories a day - with at least 50 grams of protein per day

I also stopped eating carbs, and ran for 60 minutes daily + 10,000 steps per day

Right now I am 145 pounds

Congrats for your success. A few questions now that we know that you simply didn't just start eating 1500 calories a day. Are you at your goal weight? What's your maintenance plan?

To go back to your original question - the point is that some people need help. I can only talk about my personal situation. I had tried your way, I had tried WW and a few other programs. Ultimately I had almost 200 pounds to lose and I needed a tool to help me. I also had some underlying medical conditions that were directly related to my obesity. Hence the reason for my WLS. I still have that tool 18 years later which allows me to maintain my 175 pound weight loss.

Over the last 18 years I have completely changed my habits to fit with my particular WLS - I had the duodenal switch. Not just eating habits but living habits.

basically you followed a keto diet and exercise like crazy. 60 min running everyday is a lot. Plus 10,000 steps a day.

Well, i hope you don't end up injuring yourself, because that would be a bummer. Been there- done that.

And as we age, we no longer want to immerse ourselves in 1 hour each day of aerobic exercise. I was happy to d that and more when I was younger, right now, my age - meh, not really. Plus my arthritis rally protests widely when I tried. Lets not forget the 3 car accidents I was in, none of them my fault ( i was rear-ended) that caused issues with my spine and my SI joints. It sucks. But sure, go run, until that day that your body would say "nope, not today".

I was obese, and was able to drop down weight in a year or so just by limiting my calorie intake to 1,500 calories a day. Can someone please educate me?

Thanks in advance!

I have kept my weight off for 11 years. How long have you kept your weight off?

You created a profile on a website that has multiple forums for different bariatric surgeries, only to post that you have lost weight limiting calories and want to request to be educated on the point of bariatric surgery?

May I point you to a web search engine called google?

No one here is required to educate you on bariatric surgery, or on their choices. If it was as simple as limiting calories to 1500 a day, there would be no market for diet pills, keto, Atkins, the diet industry would no longer be a multi billion dollar industry and you would not have actual medical industries dedicated to helping people save their own lives through medical intervention.

Your intent was to come here, show off your weight loss "look at me look at me" and have a bunch of people defend their decision to have WLS while you feel high and mighty about your non surgical weight loss.

Good for you. You've lost weight. You dropped calories (CICO), didn't have WLS. Now why are you here?

And before you start with the "you don't have to get defensive I was just asking" rhetoric, save it. I've been here WAY too long, and seen these kind of posts way too often. I know your type. And my success speaks for itself.

The program I went to provided me with statistics on people who lose weight with calorie restriction diets and "fad" diets like keto and how many people experience a regain after that initial weight loss. Surgery shows to have a better effect. It isn't a fail-proof way as you can still have regain but it gives you a better long term outcome as many people on here have said they are well over 10 years and maintaining their loss.

If you can lose weight and keep it off then you do not need WLS at all. However that is not the case for most people who have been overweight for a LONG time....or have genetic issues. I would say congrats to you if you can do it. You must be young though if you think that everyone else is just like you. So do whatever works for you....and let other folks do what works for them. Without the judging...

People who lose weight with weight loss surgery have 50% record of keeping it off five years later. People who do it on their own have about 3% chance of not gaining back by end of five years.
