Does French onion soup broth count as liquid?
I was wondering about foods I could eat post op. I know I will need to be on liquids for a while and I really can't stand chicken or beef broth but I do love french onion soup which I make from homemade beef stock.
I make it from scratch by roasting beef bones with veggies and then deglazing with wine and then boiling and cooking down to make the stock and then I brown lots of onions in butter add some herbs about half a bottle of wine and about half a cup of cognac and the beef stock. Then I let it boil and reduce for several hours. I have to say the soup is fantastic but even if I couldn't eat the onions and leave out the cheese and obviously the crouton would the broth be considered okay?

Liquids are for soothing your poor insides. So they all tend to be bland and boring, sorry.
You could have the broth, as long as it has few lumps and doesnt have any alcohol in it. Sorry, that is forbidden for your first year. No cheese or bread either, trust me.
You might find that what food you like and don't like changes a lot after surgery anyway.

Well......let me hide.
I actually ate french onion soup broth right after (campbells wasn't the best either but much better than any other broth). My Dr asked me what I was eating in the begining too and he did not say to stop eating it. So I kept on and it was sooooo good. Now I will have the Soup and salad from panera bread the french onion is my favorite soup.
Oh and to add I thought alcohol evaporates if cooked? So in a sense you are not really consuming alcohol.

Yes, I would strain out the onions so it would just be the broth.
And yes, alcohol does evaporate when cooked so no there would not be any real alcohol in there.
I am mostly wondering because its a rich broth that will have a decent amount of butter and other seasonings in it and its just generally very rich tasting overall.

French onion soup with the onions strained out was a mainstay of mine for a long while post-op. When I could eat soft foods, I finely shredded some VERY tenderly cooked roast beef and melted mozz cheese on top. It was fantastic and fortifying. I still strain the onions out - I don't like the texture of onions!

When I was in San Fran immediately after my DS (like 5 days after), I had french onion soup at a restaurant and it was amazing. I ate only the broth and some of the cheese on the top.
Then when I got back home, I bought a frozen pack of the french onion soup from Costco. Made one a day for a while and it was great. I WISH I had your homemade one, but this was passable.
