May not get accepted for DS
I just got back from my sleep study, which I needed to fail to be accepted as DS patient with Dr. Smith in Ga. It was a split night study so I expected them to wake me up for the cpap part of the test, but they did not. The tech said that I had scattered "breathing episodes" and I snored and woke myself up. He said the pulmonologist would read the study and see what he says. He said something before the study about seeing if my oxygen dropped low enough for the mask, at least I think that is what he was saying. I had sleep apnea about 3-4 years ago and they woke me to put the mask on. That was a different Dr. and a different sleep lab though. That Dr. did the UPP and tonsil removal surgery on me, but I feel like I still have an issue and my dh has noticed it. If I can't get the Ds, I don't know how I will lose weight. I am a "lightweight" so sleep apnea was supposed to be my comordid. I am about an hour away from Dr. Smith. I wonder who the next closet, best Ds sugeon is for a lap Ds? We had not planned to have to travel and have to have someone watch our kids. I was keeping this a secret as much a possible. I hope I didn't just wait all of this time and not get accepted.
I am somewhat in the same boat. I am hoping that I get approved. My BMI is 41 and the Dr said it would be nice if I had apnea to get approval. I have no comorbidities. My sleep study only showed a few things nothing major. When I went to the Psychologist, he said that even being nervous about the surgery counted as some anxiety. Along with my stage fright because I don't like people looking at me and always pulling my shirt down. I am hoping that helps. idk.. I drive 3 hours one way every month. I hope I do not get denied! Good luck I hope you get approved for the DS!
It might still be a possiblity that you can still have sleep apnea. I had a split sleep study also but since I have mild sleep apnea I didn't meet the requirements for them waking me up for the cpap part of the study. My advise would be not to stress about it until you have your follow up with your doctor.
The co-morbidities are likely a requirement of your insurance company, not of the doctor so switching surgeons is not going to help in this situation. I know my insurance company (Blue Cross) has a pretty short list of things that qualify as co-morbidities. Do you have a copy of that list for your insurance?
I am self pay. It is my Dr. that has the strict requirement, I think because of the COE stuff. My cholesterol is high, but not high enough for him. I am going to check on bladder issues..I need to go ALL of the time, but also have bad pain in bladder so my diagnosis is IC Interstitial Cystitis. One of the meds I take though is for Overactive Bladder and that might be a comorbid??? The doctor's office said it has to be a severe comorbid because my BMI is somewhere between 35-36.
Hi Mel, I'm a Sleep Tech. You do have to meet certain criteria to have a split night study. Each sleep labs is some what different on what they may require but you would need to have actual sleep for 2hrs and wear the CPAP for 3-4hrs for a split night. So if any of the time was off that night it could have been the reason.
However this does not mean you do not have sleep apnea mild or severe. If you had it years ago it's a high probability that you still have it even after the UPPP surgery. HTH
