Hi Sandy - good to meet you -- I'll be following in your footsteps real soon.  I am scheduled for a DS (revision from RNY) on Monday, August 15th with Dr Roslin at Lenox Hill.  I just did my pre-op testing this morning, and have my final consult with him next week on August 3rd.

Any suggestions or info you can share with me?

Thanks and regards,
Hugs,
Nannette

Hi Nannette,

Seems like Dr. Roslin has a lot of RNY to DS revisions lately!  We'll make him a pro!

I had a pretty smooth surgery and hospital stay.  Use your pain pump as long as you have it.  You really do recover faster (in my opinion) if your pain is under control.  You will see a pain management doctor on your day of surgery.  I told her that I've always had nausea coming out of anesthesia.  If this is the case with you, tell her and tell the anesthesiologist.  She gave me one of those things (looks like a small round band aid) that you stick behind your ear--can't remember the name of the drug right now.  I don't know how much it contributed, but I had no nausea at all when I came out of surgery.  She game a prescription for Percocet and I got a prescription from Dr. Roslin's team for Vicodin when I was discharged.  My advice is to fill them both.  I am out of both and Dr. Roslin won't give me anymore.  I could use just a few more, but he is against narcotics at this point in my recovery. I am crushing Tylenol, but it's not enough for me.  The pain isn't unbearable, just very uncomfortable.  I had my RNY open and I didn't need any pain medications at all after being discharged from the hospital.  I don't know if it's that the surgery that is rougher or that I'm older.  Probably both!!!!

By the way, you have to crush your medications after surgery.  Totally gross.

Best of luck and let me know if you have any other questions!!

Thanks for the info Sandy -- a couple of people told me that the pain management dr charged extra -- I am going to be self-pay (ouch!), so do you think it is worth it for the extra money?

Also, how many days were you in the hospital -- I live on the Jersey Shore and intend to get myself to the hospital the day of the surgery, but do you think if I had somebody escort me from the hospital to Port Authority, the bus ride home would be ok for me?

Also, I am only planning on taking 3 weeks off from work -- cannot afford to take any longer -- am not getting paid while I'm out, and would run the risk of losing job if I take any longer.....Doable in your opinion?

I'm tough -- handle pain fairly well and have a sedentary job -- sit at a desk mostly.  Hardest part will be the commute, although it is a 2 hour door to door bus ride and short 8 block walk!  What do you think?

Thanks for allowing me to bounce off of you?
Hugs,
Nannette

 Nannette,

I honestly don't know about arranging pmt for the pain management doctor.  You will want to clarify with Dr. Roslin just what is included in your self-pay price.  I don't know how it could be THAT much more.  I think she spent 10-15 min with me max.

I was in the hospital for 4 days.  I think at least 3 is normal for a revision.  Dr.  Roslin didn't want to discharge me because he knew I wanted to go back home to Cleveland and he wanted me to stick around through the weekend in case I had a complication.  I agreed to stay 1 more night but then I went home the next day.

If you have no complications, then 3 weeks SHOULD be okay, but I am not going to lie to you.  Recovery this time around has been much slower and more painful for me than with my RNY.  I was discharged from the hospital from an open RNY 11 yrs ago and didn't take any pain medications after that.  I feel I could STILL use Vicodin now, but I'm only doing Tylenol and Advil.

Do you have anyone who would be able to come and get you and drive you home?  The bus ride MIGHT be okay, but walking 8 blocks is going to do a number on you.

Best of luck girl!  Keep me posted,
Sandy
