I have a two part question lol.

In my quest to push protein, my hubby brought home a bottle of Muscle Milk for me to try (bless his heart).  Yes the poor fella read the label and it only had 3g sugar and WoW 20 g protein.

So he's thinking oh my, this will make Carla so happy and its something different so I will get it for her to try.  I really love my skinny husband and he is very educated about the DS or I would be dead because of stupid doctors lol.

Anyway, he did not read the little writing and dang it, it has sucralose in it.  I have not down well with sugar alcohols in past and have avoided them at all cost.

Heres my two questions.  1. Do you get over being so sensitive to Splenda in time?  2. Is Muscle Milk a good protein source for us DS ppl?

Thanks Carla

It's a good source of protein, for sure.  Whether or not you tolerate it, though, is another story.  Most anything sugar-free contains some kind of sugar alchohols.  I believe Sucralose is the same stuff in Splenda, but could be wrong.

Yes Valerie you are correct suralose is splenda.  Now I tried spenda the first year post -op and it about killed me lol  But I am 3 years + out now and I thought I read somewhere that with time you might not be as sensitive.

Dr. Greenbaum wants me to push 300g a day in right now till they get my Iron, H & H up and my body starts making red blood cells again.

When you are in extreme anemia, your albumin will drop also.  So he says its not all my fault.  I cried so hard on phone with that man and he was so sweet and tender telling me that this happens and with hard work we can fix it.  Too many bandaides covers up the real problem and that is what doctors here have been doing.  They tell you they understand DS then treat you as a Reu-en-Y gastric bypass pt.

I am going to try it tonight when we will not be going anywhere for sure.  Maybe it has just a small amount and that is why it is not listed on the label but it is in the little bitty writing that even with my new gasses/bi-focals I can hardly read my self. Nonetheless, my sweet husband did good. He is a trooper especially going through me trying to die all the time on him.

I am a fighter and I am gonna be here a long time.  trust me.

Thanks, Val I always value your opinion.

He's a sweetie indeed!

Good call trying it with no plans but staying at home to see what happens.  300g of protein will be tough, for sure.  I hope you can find something that works for you.  Otherwise, that's a lot of meat and cheese.  Don't forget about the wonders of Ricotta cheese, at 28g per cup.

Try and see.  Our only real constant is change.  No matter what you do, 300gr a day is going to be a lot of protein to 'process'.

Well, Patti and Val

Its 3 PM so I dedided I would go ahead and try it.  I like the flavor (chocolate), If it does not make me sick I will try vanilla next.  I do not like strawberry flavor anything but I love strawberries lol, I am strange that way.

I will let you all know how it goes.  Usually if something gonna hit me it will hit within 30 min.  Wish me luck.

Carla

P.S Gosh I hope this works, because if it does then I can drink one every two hours and eat inbetween to get in the protien.

When you shop for protein these days you have to read the ingredients and look for whey protein isolate as a first ingredient. There are only a hand full of protein shake companies using whey protein isolate as the primary ingredient since whey became so expensive and hard to find. Some of the ones I know of are Syntrax Nectar, JayRobb, and Unjury. There may be more but those are the ones I know about. JayRobb is the only one that uses stevia as a sweetener. It's more expensive but top quality. You can order it online or Whole Foods carries it. You might check your grocery store too. One of the ladies on a Facebook group I belong to can find it at her regular grocery store in Louisiana.

Thanks Gina,

So far so good.  I bloated a little but did not throw it up, and it did not run out the other end.  So maybe this is a answer to a prayer.  I am getting some more tomorrow and I would like to try vanilla too.  Sams Club seems to have the best price so far.

Gina,

What is your take on:  "whey protein concentrate"???

Personal bias here---I think whey protein concentrate is harder for our systems to process. Some folks do fine with it and some of us with pickier issues don't. Perhaps folks that are still fairly early out can do ok with them since they are malabsorbing so much but those of us who are further out are probably absorbing the macronutrients we don't want to---adding pounds instead of nutrients.

It's really hard to know for sure since sugar alcohols can also play a role. Remember when people posted about Champion before they switched to protein concentrate? Even then some of us couldn't handle Champion and ended up with gurgle gut. I think Michelle said it was the proportions of the blend of whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate and milk solids and possibly that it was sweetened with Equal..I can't remember what Equal translates into "itol" wise.
