I'm coming up fast on my 9th surgiversary, and I still discover new things that give me gas as I am more in-tune with my body.  I still see so many questions about gas, I thought I'd share what my triggers are and invite other vets to add some more.  Hopefully this will give our newbies an aid of identifying their culprits to gas and other gastric distressors.

  • Pasta
  • Sourdough bread
  • onions and leeks
  • terriyaki sauce
  • straight milk (I'm fine with other dairy and things cooked with milk - but straight uncooked milk gets me)
  • McDonalds ice cream (Burger King ice cream is fine)
  • Whey protein
  • Perogies (see pasta)
  • Caesar Salad in a bag (something Del Monte adds in it)
  • Sorbitol
  • Malitol
  • Burger King burgers
  • Most pizza crust, especially Uno's

Similar to your list:

Sugar alcohols ending in -itol
Sugar
Gluten from wheat flour
Weigh****cher's ice cream (see sugar and sugar alcohols above)
Peanuts if I go too far overboard
Soft drinks
Too much fat in the diet, i.e. drinking all 4 protein shakes with heavy whipping cream

Is it whole milk that gives you gas issues?  I've found that the lower the fat content, the higher the sugar (lactose) content.  I can drink whole milk just fine. and I even add some heavy cream to it, but 2%, skim and fat-free milk all give me gas from Hades.  Ice cream bothers me, too.

It seems all milk.  I can do heavy cream okay, and breve's, but yeah, it seems all milk for me, but not much other dairy.

Straight milk also for me - Lactaids OK though.

Some breading gives me gas - Fried chicken not a problem but I picked up some
breaded boneless chicken wings from the grocery that really set me off.

Too many carbs at once can do it. I'm OK with a few crackers or one cookie but if I overindulge gas
is the first of my problems.

I'm OK with sugar free drinks - crystal light, propel but sugar free chocolate lights me up.

Still not a varied diet 13 months out but those are definite triggers.

It's more trial and error for the most part.  I eat very strategically while at work through the day, and experiment at night.  It's important to try only one new thing at a time to help pinpoint effects.  Onions were such a staple in my life, it took several years to figure them out.

Maybe that's why I fart a lot lol, I use a lot of Onions to prepare my soup. I would have to watch out.

Cut one in half and cook it in the soup - then remove it.  It works for me.  I DO miss French Onion Soup though...no way around that one.
