Cardio heart rate

Hi Everyone ~ I have been working out diligently since surgery a year ago, but this is the first time I've visited this board. I generally do 30-45 minutes of cardio 2-3 days a week, plus 30 minutes cardio and weight training with a trainer 3 other days of the week. Right now, I'm having a hard time getting my heart rate up to a good cardio zone. I've increased my resistance on the elliptical (from 2 to 4) and increased my speed, but the highest I can get my heart rate is in the 120's. I am 5'1" tall, 35 years old, and weigh 159. I am still taking 50 mg of Toprol for my hypertension (which is down from 200 mg before surgery). Toprol does slow my heart rate, but come on! Anyone have any ideas on what I can do to kick it up? Or is my cardio heart rate ok? Thanks for any input! Angie

Angie, I know it seems a little odd, but this is common amongst those who take Toprol or other beta blockers. There is often a substantial decrease in exercise heart rate. As long as you have been cleared by your physician to exercsie at will, do not be alarmed by this. Jeremy Gentles, CSCS ObesityHelp Professional
