Weight Training and making the most of my valuable time

I have seen 2 personal trainers, both with very different philosophies.  i very much like them both but get bored and notice the loss of effectiveness of the programs that they set up for me over time.  I am looking for good resources from bariatric patients perspective, what has worked for you.  I am looking specifically for resources to help me understand the most effective order to work out muscle groups, how often to work them, how most effectivley to pair muscle groups and should I work on high weight or high reps?  Can I use a different philosopy for different areas of the body that have very different needs?  I need to understand these concepts so that I can set up my own workouts that are effective and change them at appropriate times to maximize efficency and aleviate boredom!!  I have been reading alot of articles in magazines and have purchased several books lately they all tell you what to do but not why to do it that wayand it is costing me a small fortune.  i also want to be able to set up good workouts for home, the gym, hotels and even in the office or at lunch on a really busy day.  My schedule is too full I get up at 4am to be at the gym by 5 am  and then get to work on time I need to make the most efficient use of every moment.  And lastly HOW do you make cardio fun and exciting??? Thanks Becki

Hi Becki,

First...I luv you. You're a little ADHD aren't you? (sorry) I really appreciate your enthusiasm and totally understand the thirst for knowledge regarding training. I've had the thirst since I was 12. So many questions. I've only been reading everything I can get my hands on for 35 years or so and still don't have all the answers. As my Training guru, Louie Simmons, said once regarding training "Everything works but nothing works forever." There are different answers depending on your goals. Goals change all the time too, especially while training for any length of time, so the answers change all the time. I'm going to point you in a couple of different directions. Because I don't know exactly what your goals are. There are certain people and websites I have some respect for and get a lot of good information from.

Just one more thing...there is no one perfect way to train. Everybody responds to training in different ways. There's even a mental aspect about training certain ways that you can't really predict. It's all trial and error. Even the world's best bodybuilders, powerlifter and  Olympic lifters are always searching and trying new things. Change kills the inherit boredom of training too. Training is repetitive by nature so change is a good thing. Your body adapts to any training very quickly and that's what training is all about. Train, adapt, rest, grow, change, train, adapt, rest, grow...repeat.

( Change can be adding weight, more reps, less rest, supersets, different angles or equipment. The list is endless. )

Hello Becki, The questions you have asked are loaded ones but excellent issues to bring up. To gather a full understanding of these things may require more than what a couple of message board reply's can offer. Now, I know that you said you are looking for good resources from the bariatric patient perspective but if you would like information from a non-obese individual who is experienced in bariatrics and has a formal education in exercise physiology, you may call me at the number provided below.

Becki, I kept my cardio fun by doing different things. Once, I tried for the MS150 bike ride which is a 150 mile bike ride/fund raiser over a period of 2 days, I rode 100 miles a week for training for a couple months leading up to it. (We have a very nice 32 mile round trip bike path to the coast.) It took me HOURS to fini**** at first later, I was doing the ride in 2 hours (including a short pee break at 16 miles.)   High reps or high weight depends on what you are trying to do with that part of your body. In hotels, I usually hit their gyms or go out for a run/walk. I try to inspire others to do things with me. This keeps me motivated and if I know I am going to meet someone, I show up.

Personally, I work below my waist, the the next above my waist. I work it until I feel it!

Good luck on sorting all this out!
