Sports drinks for RnY patients

Does anybody use Gatorade, Accelerade or other sports drinks for refueling during endurance exercise after RnY?  What about Gu's or other products?

I have a pretty sensitive stomach now.  I have found that I can do Clif Shot bloks during a half-marathon, but I keep it in my cheek for miles.  Once I decide to chew it, there better be a porta-potty within view with no line!  I usually manage a maximum of two of those during a half-marathon, which is far less than the product suggests.

I have not dared any sports drinks, but I am beginning to feel that I need to try.  I know I bonked during my last half-marathon--at about Mile 11 I was completely out of gas.  I finished, but I was a good 10 minutes slower than my PR, and I think it had to do with running out of glycogen.

Any suggestions?  Any products that you have experience with that do or don't cause gastrointestinal problems or dumping?  Honestly, I never imagined that I would get so hooked on running or I might have chosen a different WLS procedure that wouldn't cause the dumping.

I use Nuun electrolyte tablets, they have 8 calories a tablet, but no sugars. You may want to try them and adjust the amount of water used.

I use Powerade zero, Nuun and Hammer Fizz tabs for electrolyte replacement.  For nutrition I use GU products and Honey Stinger Waffles and have no issues with them.  But like everything else not all products will work for everyone.  Even not WLS peeps will get GI issues from one product and not from another. The best way is to experiment at home and then take it to a training run.  I know for me that When it comes to actually using the product in an event rather than just seeing if I can tolerate it is 2 separate items.   I can tolerate most things but when at mile 11 certain things will just GAG me like nothing.  I have pretty much 2 gels and 1 Chomps flavor I can use year round.  Winter I have a 3rd gel I can use because of taste and consistency.

You probably are right and did BONK.  What is your pre-race nutrition or daily nutrition like?  This can have an influence on your glycogen stores.

I have recently switched my daily diet around and have been able to complete 2+ hour workouts with no to little nutrition and the nurition I did use was on a 4 hour training day and was no sports products other than electrolytes.  But again everyone is different.

Thanks for the replies.   I have some NUUN tablets but have not tried them, guess I'd better.  I use Propel Zero in my regular daily water intake, and that works fine.  I have a 10 mile race coming up on March 9th, may have to experiment in my long run this weekend.

The half-marathon where I bonked was the Disney Wine & Dine Half, which takes place starting at 10pm.  I think that was part of the problem--we didn't really know how to fuel for a night race and such a large race, too.  We ate lunch, but not much for supper at all and nothing after 5pm.  We had to get on the bus at 7:30pm to get to the start area because of the number of participants, where we waited around for our corral to start at 10:10pm.  That was just too much time without food, I think.  We were also worried about long lines for the porta-potties at the start area, and that was certainly the case.

You learn something new at every race, that's for sure.  I will try your suggestions.  I noticed, Paul C., that we had surgery quite close to the same date.  Way to go!

I tolerate peanut butter and chocolate outrage GU's and one of the Hammer Gels fine.   Some of the other GU's can make me very nauseated.  I use a GU every 45 minutes or more often if I need it.  It may occasionally be more than I need, but I have bonked out of the blue once or twice and I HATE it!!!   I am trying to get used to the Nunn's when I am on my bike.  I carry my own bottle on my 1/2's and it starts out full of G2.  I add water to it as I need to.  I am a really heavy sweater and as I start going further than the 1/2 that is going to potentially be an issue.

I think Nuun has changed their formula as it isn't as salty tasting as I remember it being but I am a huge Fan of Hammer Fizz tablets  much better than NuuN in my opinion.

Remember with Electrolytes though that different products are going to have different profiles.  I sweat like a mofo so at Augusta last year I was actually doing salt tablets every 30 min on the run leg.  I may use Salt tablets exclusively for my long runs.  So if you are a heavy sweater you may have a greater benefit from one product over another.

Thanks, I will try the Hammer Fizz, because I notice I dont drink as much because I dont like the NuuN tabs.  This may sound like a stupid question, but, how do you use one every 30 min?  Do you drop it in the the water cups on the course?   Did you use the Perform that was offered? I have heard some not so great things about it from a gut standpoint.

Oh, I like the sound of capsules!!!   I am planning on GU's.  I haven't found a Chomps that makes me not want to hurl.  Did you get your salt pills at a regular store or athletic/running store?
