10K to half Marathon

Over the past 3 years, I have casually run. Cycling is my love but I wan ted a challenge. Running seemed like a good match. After many 5Ks, I ventured into 10Ks this year. Surprisingly, I've done pretty well. I will never bee a speed demon but I finish and still have energy. I am looking for some advice from others who have moved from 10Ks to a half marathon. How hard was the transition. How much more of a rigid training plan is needed. I want to run a half marathon in late September. I sense that I can do it. How realistic is that?

You'd probably want the words of an actual certified coach, but I'll throw my opinion in..... most Half programs I've done train for 3-4 months but since you've been doing 5k & 10ks, condensing a plan to 2-3 months should be fine. Just don't skip your long runs! Aim for your longest long run to be around 14-15mi, a few weeks before your Half. I found it very psychologically important to know I can do more than the race expects, but that only applies to Half-Marathon or less. Running 3 days per week should be ok, make sure you know how your body handles fuel & what clothes you're gonna wear, train in the conditions you'd expect to race, use your biking on cross-training days, and good luck!!

I have NEVER run; but, last year, my son-in-law told us we could only go back to Disney if we would run the Wine and Dine half.  We've been training since 3/19 using the Galloway method and I am pleased to report that we have finished two 5k's, a 10K that was also a trail run, and are now at 8mi for our long run.  Galloway's method has made this possible and we are delighted.  Best of luck on your transition!

Very feesible. You've already been training. Get a schedule started now :-)

Surgery March 23/2011. Completed three full marathons and two half marathons, two half Ironman distances. Completed my first Full Ironman distance (4 km swim, 180 km bike, 42.2 km (full marathon) run) in Muskoka August 30/2015. Next Ironman Lake Placid July 23/2017!

I love the FIRST Half-Marathon plan. It has you doing 3 workouts a week, 1 speed, 1 tempo and 1 long/endurance run. I structure all my training (swim, bike, run) around its principles, in fact.
