Topic: RE: Brittany Runs a Marathon and an Update

Hi all!

I got to see Brittany Runs a Marathon yesterday. I had a lot of trepidation going into it. I was worried it would be full of fat shaming and have the typical plot of "screwed up woman loses weight and her life is now perfect." It was neither of those things.

It felt very real and honest to me. A number of the conversations Brittany had with non-runners felt like they could have been pulled verbatim from conversations I've had. Specifically the "I'm running a 5k" met with, "You're running a marathon?!"

I don't like recommending things, so I'll just say that I'm really glad I saw this - you might be glad to see it too!

Update:
I haven't been around much since I moved at the beginning of August. While the move was expected, the speed at which everything came together and needed to happen was NOT expected.

I'm finally starting to feel settled and getting my fitness schedule on track. Too many fitness class options is not necessarily a good thing!

It's always hard for me to find a place that offers daytime classes. So many gyms only seem to offer morning and evening classes, since that's when most people are able to do them. I love that this place has classes all the time :)

Hi all, I've been mostly AFK since my life has been ridiculous between school, my internship, and my imminent move.

My new area has really amazing coverage with YMCAs and look at this fitness class schedule!! The hardest part is going to be picking which classes to take, since I want to take them all :)

Sadly it is impossible to spot reduce - it might just be that the weight on your legs is what will come off last.

For specifically building muscle and function in your legs, you should talk with a trainer at the gym or a physical therapist to get an exercise plan that is appropriate for your body.

And it might also be wise to talk to your doctor about your legs to rule out something like lymphedema.

I've been pretty AFK due to school. My exercising is really just my fitness classes at this point. My uterus is making me avoid running since running = excruciating pain. Not running has its own issues. So that sucks. I've got a race this weekend that's supposed to be a half, but I'm probably just going to walk the 5k and call it a day. Glad I don't need to prove to myself that I CAN do a half, because I already know I can.

Thankfully I just got answers about my uterus on Friday and I'll know what the fix-action is on the 15th. Good to know there's resolution in sight!

Topic: RE: Advice

What is your diet plan?

I think the best lifting book out there is New Rules of Lifting. It builds on the basic movement of the human body, has good exercise plans, and good progression information. (I've earned a personal trainer certificate through my college, and the methods in NROL are very sound based on what I've learned.) It doesn't require that much equipment either, which is a plus.

As for cardio - do the cardio you'll enjoy. If you're going to run or walk, invest in good shoes. Go to your local speciality shoe store and get fitted. Running can totally be safe for your joints, but the idea is you need to build up your ability. Start with a good walk/run program - my recommendation is the Zombies Run! 5k Training app. It's amazing. :)

If you're going to elliptical, make sure you're keeping your feet flat on the pads. Swimming is also awesome as is bicycling. Find what you'll enjoy and do it! Just remember to start out easy. The number one way people injure themselves is by trying to do too much too soon and once you injure yourself, it's hard to get back to it.

It would also be wise to include some flexibility work in your schedule. My preference for that is yoga. I think it's best to start a yoga practice with classes so you can get correction from an instructor if necessary, but there are also great videos and apps out there.

I meant to reply to my own question and then got completely sidetracked. I definitely prefer exercising first thing in the morning, fasted. However that's been hard with the weather and the need to run at the gym! It seems like I'm better at going to the gym around 1pm - well after breakfast, but before lunch.

Friday - MFR class

Saturday - running (parkrun)

I forgot to check in earlier in the week!

Monday - intermediate pilates mat class
Tuesday - running, yoga
Wednesday - pilates mat class
Thursday - nothing. I was going to run at the gym, but I screwed my foot up due to being a klutz.
Friday - MFR class
Saturday - hopefully walking, yoga
Sunday - yoga

And, in GREAT news, my Friday pilates class that was cancelled has been uncancelled! It starts back up in a few weeks and I'm hoping I'll be able to make it work with my life.

Sadly my fall half marathon was just cancelled - it's been going on for at least a decade, but they decided it was no longer sustainable. RIP Navy Air Force Half Marathon. So now I'm debating what I'm going to do.

March - half marathon
October - 10k
October, 6 days later - 5k, but I can switch it for a second half marathon if I want to do a second one in the year... which I'd sort of like to do. Just not sure about the timing.

Plus weekly 5k races with parkrun about three weeks of every month.

My partner, who runs marathons, tends to take an entire week off running after a race and feels like crap, but still runs some, in the second week after the marathon. He says the rule of thumb is 1 day of recovery per mile of race - at least when it comes to thinking of running fast again :)

He also says, "I normally walk funny and grunt at stairs 3-4 days after a marathon." Hehehe.
