My mother-in-law just got diagnosed with lymphedema but it's in her lower abdomen.  She only has one leg and the extra weight in her abdomen makes its even harder to get around. Does anyone have any info on how to help? She is in a rehab unit now cause she is unable to live alone.  Is there hope for her???

I have lymphedema of the lower extremities and lower abdomen and arms. I just lost alot of weight from RNY(gastric bypass) and it has really helped my legs and abdomen. It was so bad by the end of the evening my belly would shosh as I walked. After treatment I am now wersring compression pantihose and medium support panties. My stomach has gone down tremendously. I find when my legs and belly fil with fluid it helps to sleep with my legs elevated above my heart and I do the manual massage.I still have alot of fluid in my thighs but everyday is better. I have another 50-60 lb.s to go to meet my goal where I will feel human again.

To get alot more info may want to check out http://www.lymphedemapeople.com

There are also lists of specialists according to the area you live and lots of resources.  Make sure the treatment she is getting is correct.  It is also a message board where you can ask questions as well.
