Hi there - just wondering if any fellow Canadians have successfully used the cost of having bariatric surgery in Mexico as a tax deduction - classifying the surgery as a health care expense? Tax time is coming up and we are going to go that route. Thanks for any feedback.

I did Mary. I was warned by my accountant I probably would be audited and I was last August. All went well though because I had my receipts including airfare and also my doctors note stating I had to go to Mwxico because I was unable to get the surgery for many years here.  Linda

I was wondering the same thing. Do I need the doctor's note?

Yes I'm positive you need a doctors note. It just needs to state you had to go because you couldn't get the surgery in your city, province or state. My doctor even said i could not get the surgery at this time and they accepted it.  Linda
