Bad Experience with Corn on the Cob

Tonight for dinner we had Bbq'd steaks, corn on the cob and a big salad I made with everything we all love in it, it was a great dinner. I didn't have a lot of the steak cuz it don't always sit well with me. I ate mostly salad, it took me up until about 10 months post-op to be able to eat salad again lol.

Ok, so here is what happened to me tonight that has probably put me off of corn on the cob or any form of corn for good and get read for TMI lol.

It's been hours since dinner and I was going to make myself some popcorn when I realized there was leftover corn on the cob so I made two and put some butter on them which was part of my mistake...I don't dump from sugar but I sure as hell don't tolerate fat, grease, butter, etc very well at all. Corn is also hard to digest so taking two of them was stupid on my part. I was full, overly so, after the first one so I waited to give my pouch some time (yeah right) and when I didn't have that uncomfortable feeling anymore I dug into the second corn on the cob. I was chowing it down as fast as I could to get it in when about 3/4 of the way done it I felt that "feeling". Those of you who have had this know the feeling, the pain. I had taken in too much and as fast as I was eating it I bet it wasn't just a bite or two too much by the time my brain screamed at me to stop.

I couldn't breathe so I paced around and took a papaya enzyme which always helps. More pain. I went to the bathroom and attempted to "get rid of the food" but I never did have any gag reflex so for me to puke takes more than a finger down the throat (guys this is not the place you insert suggestions either!). So there I was, bending over the toilet for 45 minutes and I only had the tiniest "foamie" ejected in that time. The pain was getting worse.

I went downstairs and was desperate to be able to breathe and not have that pain so I quickly ate two more of the papaya enzymes....OMG THE PAIN! This time I ran to the bathroom and just made it to the toilet...I am quite sure that twice as much corn came out as went in! I have not, in the year since surgery, puked up anything other than "foam", not until this time! Corn has got to be the grossest thing to bring back up. It made me gag more and I couldn't stop puking! I was at the point it was almost coming out of my nose and I couldn't see out of my glasses due to the tears falling on the lenses from puking so much.

I know this is too much info but I just want everyone to know something. I had thought my pouch was all stretched out even though my surgeon says it aint. I can eat so much more now, well....until tonight lol. My pouch is still working and still reminding me of its true size! I was so excited to have corn on the cob as I hadn't had it in two years...now I don't think I can ever look at it again lol. Corn is just not something you want to experience in reverse let me tell you!

Of course since I've puked I feel tons better which is the one upside to puking with WLS, instant relief! My pouch is still *****ing at me a bit and will be tender tomorrow (yes I know this from experience) but I learned a lesson (again) and am glad to know my pouch is still working great lol.

It sounds like it wasn't the corn itself just the amount maybe?

I've already experienced what you have.. last night in fact.. 8 hours of hell and 3 up-chucks. It was 5am before it finally subsided and I was able to go to sleep.

All because I ate something too dry.

I don't think it was really the corn but the butter that I slathered on it, I don't tolerate butter well at all

Corn is one of my favourite veggies but post-op, it is not my friend.  Unless I chew and chew and chew the little kernels (which starts to taste yucky after a while), I will get sick on it or at the very least, have pain in my pouch for a period afterward.

I have noticed that I am eating faster than I should at times and will pay for it later when my pouch realizes it is too full.  I think that is a very important reason to learn to eat slowly - to let our pouches have the chance to tell us when to stop.

Hope you are feeling better this morning.  Bet ya won't want corn for a while, huh?  Poor you!

Take care

Nancy, I can usually eat a lot of corn but this time I think the combo of butter on it and eating that second cob so fast (not realizing I might already be too full) did it for me. I won't even look at corn now!

Sorry you had to go through this!  I guess there is always a lesson learned for next time, but hopefully you'll get that full signal earlier with the corn and not have to exclude it.

I haven't had any trouble with corn on the cob - maybe you ate too much of it? I can barely get through one cob, let alone 2.

Karen, I can usually eat a ton of corn no problem but when I eat frozen corn I don't put a whole lot of butter in it, the corn on the cob I really slathered on the butter and my pouch has never tolerated any fats well so when I fry something or put butter on anything it really upsets my pouch. I am sure it was a combination of the butter and eating too fast so I didn't realize I was full yet.

I went grocery shopping the other day and was drooling over the corn on the cob.  I doubt I can eat it but besides that it was freaking 4 bucks for 6, pffft no thanks.  But it would not leave my mind.  I LOVE corn on the cob.  Well that was until your post LMAO. I puke so  much so often I can honestly feel everything you said and guess what?? I no longer am drooling over corn on the cob lmao.  Glad your feeling better lol.
