Ferrous Gluconate

My iron is low - the dietician called and told me that I was to get "ferrous gluconate" twice a day. The pharmacist kind of scared me a bit about taking it - he said it will probably bother my stomach, and may cause constipation. I know the iron in my prenatal vitamins a few years ago really bothered me and I had to stop taking them. I am wondering if anyone else takes or had to take ferrous gluconate and how did it work for you... Tx Sherri

I had constipation problems with it.  I take Proferrin now and it doesn't bother me at all.

I'm with Chris, I think that Profferin is better.  Non constipating and you can take it with other vitamins and calcium and it is not constipating.

I am also on iron pills for low iron.  I use the regular iron pills but was told that the slow release type is much better for your stomach.
They are more expensive so I'd ask if you could get a perscription to offset the cost.

Slow release is easier on your stomach, but as a post-op, you won't adequately absorb it, so it is a waste of money. Better to go with profferin.

I was prescribed that and didn't take long to replace it with proferrin and now feramax.

Why did i switch - too much of a pain to take (can't take it with this, should take it with that) and cause it was constipating..

I find proferrin tablets a bit bigger to take than the feramax - both though easy to take, can take anytime (no food rules) and best of all they don't add to constipation issues.
Sometimes the best support  you can get isn't all purple puddles and pink rainbows.

I take Floravit Iron in the liquid form.  It is yeast, dye, gluten and sugar free.  Never had any problems with constipation taking it.

I started with liquid iron and it made me constipated and stained my teeth badly - which is apparently the norm when I asked, although no one told me about it before hand.  Have switched to Feramax which as noted above is easy to take and apparently has no conflicts with other things because it is a different kind of iron (heme iron).  My blood work is now normal and I feel great.  Claire  (Just had my teeth whitened.)

It was recommended by our pharmacy's chemist (that's right a chemist) not a pharmacist or dietician, someone who actually understands how the elements and our system works to use  he suggested I try Nutri-Chem's Ferrotrate , which I did after trying 4 other brands of Iron with no suitable results...

this is what their website states about their product

Iron exists in 2 chemical states: ferric and ferrous. Humans absorb ferrous iron on average about 5 times better than ferric iron. Ferrotrate contains ferrous iron, as a ferrous citrate chelate. While several forms of ferrous iron supplements are available, Ferrotrate has 3 advantages:

*Up to 30% of a ferrous citrate supplement can be absorbed

*Ferrotrate is less likely to cause constipation, like other forms of iron

*Ferrotrate contains vitamin C, which enhances the absorption of iron

Ferrotrate is a well-absorbed form of supplemental iron, with fewer side effects.

just my 2 cents worth
