Proferrin Prices at Costco!
VSG on 01/25/12
I know some people were talking about Proferrin Iron and the cost at Costco - I went into Costco very briefly today to price out some vitamins and they had the Proferrin Iron in 90 tabs per bottle at this time - the cost for 90 was $49.97
I don't know why she would tell you take any kind of iron salt as they cannot be well absorbed post-RNY. Non-salt forms of iron like carbonyl iron or heme iron are the only ones your body can make use of. Ferrous sulfate will also make you very constipated, whereas proferrin won't.
This is straight from the ASMBS supplement guidelines:
Ferrous forms of iron are not recommended due to the decreased concentration of stomach acid following RNY surgery. Instead, carbonyl iron is the recommended form of non-heme iron. For severely deficient patients, heme iron may be necessary.
Sorry to say it, but your nurse has no idea what she's talking about. The only acceptable type of iron post-op is carbonyl or heme, period.

I'm not being critical of you, only of the nurse who gave you bad information. I'd be happy to send her an email with the ASMBS guidelines about iron supplementation for RNYers if you'd like to give me her email address. I rather thought you'd like to have this information so you can switch yourself to an appropriate type of iron, so you don't become anemic. There's nothing to stop you from switching to carbonyl or heme iron and simply letting the nurse know why the next time you see her.
