I moved a couple of weeks ago (talk about stressful!!!) and I was not-so-gently reminded of my ineptitude with household repairs. I was almost completely unpacked but still had no blinds/curtains up. I decided I could do it myself. I borrowed a drill from my friend, bought the curtain rods and new curtains. I only have two windows that needed new hardware - my bedroom and the living room. I decided to attempt my bedroom first. Here's what I have instead of covered windows:

* I needed 6 holes to hang the rod. I ended up with 8.

* 6 anchors are hanging halfway out of the wall.

* Gave up on the anchors and decided to put the screws directly into the wall. Stripped the screws.

* Cracked the top window facing

* Knocked off the right window facing

* Rod is on the floor, curtains are still in their package, still no privacy in my bedroom.

*Think I'll have to bite the bullet and pay someone to repair my handiwork and hang the curtains *sigh*

Don't make me feel like a failure all on my own! Share your less than stellar moments.

*Winning the Lotto! I keep trying, I keep failing.
*Painting my nails.... Is it supposed to be all around the skin?
*Painting trim on walls, I ALWAY**** the ceiling despite how careful I am.

I think most of us are lacking in the loto winning category, LOL.

I'm pretty bad at painting, too. Mostly because I'm impatient and try to finish too quickly.

cleaning!  I spend hours cleaning, sit down and am amazed at how dirty everything is I just cleaned!
Remembering!  anything, everything!  I am at that age where nouns have been completely erased! You know, the whatsis, that thingy, etc!

patience for stupidity!  Really bad at hiding my annoyance over things I consider stupid!  When someone does the same thing over and over, expecting a different outcome somehow!  Have to walk away!

I can though, hang almost anything, anywhere!  gyprock, cement, plaster, etc.  If I could recommend, as you have a drill, mark the places you want the rod holders, drop the holders, use a very small drill bit to drill strait into those marks.  Then pick up the rod holder, do not use the drill but a screw driver and screw anchors (the type that look like a spiral drill, kinda metallic looking with a star shaped end to screw into) into these small predrilled holes.  Then, again with a screwdriver, screw in the rod holders into the anchors.  Hang the rod and curtains.

Hope it works for ya!  Regards, Ian

I wished you lived closer, Ian. I'd hire you in a second!

Believe it or not, your directions are the ones I followed. I had the correct drill bit, used a screw driver. Only difference was that I used the plastic anchors that came with the rods. I know it sounds simple. I have it all in my noggin. I just can't put it into practice. "Canada's Worst Handyman" here I come!

It can be so difficult to learn to accept compliments. Good luck with becoming better at that. Remember, when someone says something nice about you they're giving you a gift. Think about how wonderful it feels to give someone a gift (and think about how disappointing it would be if they belittled the gift you just gave them.) This is a work in progress for me, as well.

There are SO many things i'm bad at.
1. housework. Can't get the motivation to do it, i get distracted, and often end up making more of a mess, cuz i get focused on 'organizing' things rather than cleaning.
2. painting my toenails. I cannot stay inside the lines. i think i missed that class in kindergarten.
3. finishing things. I get gung ho on starting things, end up never finishing them.
4. doing my hair. I can NEVER get it to look like the hairdresser does, or even remotely close. Once in a while, i get it to look good, but its a total fluke.

I hear you on the housework thing. I envy those who manage to keep their house neat and tidy all the time. It's something I work at every day and never seem to get too far ahead. (I think living with a very messy teenager makes it ten times worse!)

What I'm bad at, hmm, where to start
1) being in style, eventually it'll come around to mine, some day, maybe
2) doing makup & hair, don't wear any make up and my hair is there.
3) being organized.  Happens for about 5 minutes once in a blue moon
4) having patience with idiots on the road, wether they are driving or walking
5) judging ages and sizes (don't let me shop for you)
6) cleaning up, I can clean but it's a big clean when I get tired of the mess, it's the maintenance cleaning I'm bad at.
7) drawing, can't draw a straight line with a ruler.
8) spelling, why I like spell check.

Oh there's lots more but you're asking on a Friday morning, and my head is already hurting.

Cathy
