short answer? never. Carbonated beverages are highly frowned upon post op due to the carbonation

I had soda two weeks post op. I am now 11 years post op and gained every bit of it back! So if you don't want to have a Gastrogastric Fistula that requires you to have a completely new surgery done...STAY AWAY FROM THE CARBONATION!!!

I'm a Pepsi addict and I know how hard it is but I went through all that pain and recovery just to have to do it all again. I don't wish that on anyone!

Thank-you Jessica for your post. In my mind just like yours i feel if you are having this surgery ,CARBONATION should not even be thought about. The RD, RN AND the Doctor even warn you before surgery , no more carbonated drinks period. I am sorry Jessica about your hard lesson learned. Thank-you for warning others who may think it is okay. In the end , it is a personal choice. Why some would take the chance to possibly ruin this tool is scary. I myself love diet soda, i havent had any since March and i choose not to have any carbonated drinks after my surgery either..... Take Care Everyone Krista...

I was never warned by anyone to avoid carbonated drinks forever. I know in the first few weeks my literature says not to have carbonated drinks but nothing after that.  That is why I will speak to the doctor and ask him directly and I would like to see literature with definitive research as to why carbonated drinks are dangerous and what problems they can cause.  Again, I don't want pop I want to have mineral water.  Zero calories just some bubbles.  If I have definitive reasons why it's a bad thing then I won't have it. Not trying to defy the doctors just asking questions.

That's interesting - at TWH, they told us many times pre-op that we weren't going to ever be allowed to have carbonated drinks again.

The other thing is that a lot of people who have tried carbonated stuff after surgery find that it makes them really gassy.  I haven't tried anything carbonated so I wouldn't know from personal experience, but this is one rule I'm going to follow.  Besides, I don't miss the carbonated stuff anyhow.

They told us at TWH that carbonated stuff can stretch your pouch because the gassiness fills it up.  I don't quite get how that works physically, but I'm no doctor or anatomy specialist, so I'll just take their word for it on that one. :)

Referral to registry: Oct 21, 2011    Orientation (TWH): Feb 22, 2012     Surgery: Nov 7, 2012

It appears, for once anyway, that each centre has the same opinion about this and no carbonated drinks. It appears for other things, the centers differ slightly - but this does seem to be a common theme. In all honesty all I can remember at my orientation when it was brought up, we couldn't have any carbonated drinks because it would be like using sand paper in our pouch. That was the analogy the nurse had given us.

Unfortunately, I was not prepared for this. I was 19, I did not see a nutritionist, I did not see a psychologist, I didn't even see the surgeon until 2 weeks before surgery. I was explained how the surgery was performed but not much beyond that. I'm pretty sure I was told no soda, but silly me thought that since it didn't make me sick I could have it.

Now I am facing revision, my new surgeon says it's not my fault that I developed a gigantic gastric fistula, my two stomachs are reconnected. Found this out when they did an EGD for reflux and found this and bile reflux occurring. So in July possibly, I will be having a RNY diversion. It is the treatment for bile reflux. It happens to also be very similar to the RNY gastric bypass.  I haven't had a soda in 2 months. I finally made it to 8 cups of water yesterday! (I am not a big drinker of anything!) I've stopped grazing. Set meals at set times. I'm following the diet the dietician gave me and have already lost 2 lbs. I have to lose 23 before surgery date! I'm walking again and I met with the psychologist yesterday. This is all stuff that did not happen before my last surgery. I remember eating all kinds of bad stuff the day before surgery. The surgeon told me to!

Anywhoo, I'm scared to death. They say this surgery will be risky because it's my second. I'll have a greater chance for complications. I'll have greater malabsorbtion issues. So much so that I could die of Malnutrition if I don't eat and take my vitamins correctly! I'm almost thinking of not doing it. Just live with the bile reflux. I just don't know.

Sorry, off topic, just needed to share.

I don't drink pop, never had. I'm talking about mineral water. I know lots of people who drink diet coke and the like. That's not what I want.
