Dying hair when it's falling out ?!?!

I am going to a wedding in BC next week and my hair is in desperate need of being dyed. I haven't died it since just before surgery (so around 4 1/2 months ago)
I am losing hair like a mad woman right now and am wondering if dying it will make it worse (??)
Anyone with experience??

Thanks!!
Sarah

Nope! A lot of people say their hair falls out after going lighter but what is actually happening is breakage from over processing. But dyeing your hair shouldn't cause any extra hair loss on top of what is already happening. If you're going to a stylist just mention what's going on and maybe they can even give you a cut/layers to help with volume and fullness. If you're dyeing at home make sure the brand you use says "ammonia free", as ammonia is hard on your hair and can cause breakage if it's already weak :)

Talk to your hairdresser. My hairdresser would not even think of highlighter the hair. She said it was going through enough and damage enough to let it get healthy again.

I'm 10 months out and have been dying my hair the entire time, every 6-8 weeks or so. Full colour. Bleaching/highlighting is much harder on your hair, as is curling/flat ironing. My advice, get a good quality product. Get a good quality flat iron spray to protect your hair.

and then...gofor it!

I went to my hairdresser and had it dyed. I actually have dyed it three times in 7 months since surgery and mine was falling out like crazy it is actually starting to slow down (keeping fingers crossed)

I also never cut my hair short I have long hair and my hairdresser recommended I put layers in it would be less noticeable when it was falling our or breaking off and she was right.

I also use a good shampoo and conditioner for thinning hair called Nioxin

I get mine coloured every 3 weeks and highlighted every 2.5 to 3 months. It has no impact on our hair falling out worse.  I would say it actually adds life to the hair.  Besides there was no way I wasn't colouring it

I totally agree with Dar, it adds life to our hair, and no damage is done by coloring your hair.

I think it helps us to feel good about our new look and body image as well.  Go for it, try something different

and have fun!

Awesome! Thanks everyone!! I was going to put in some highlights but maybe I'll stick to just an overall colour to cover my roots and greys :-D I have thick, long hair with layers in it already .... the only one who notices the thinning is me so far. I could barely twist a hair elastic around my hair twice and now I can do it twice with room to spare. Yikes!

If your hair is healthy otherwise the highlights won't hurt - hair loss happens under the skin, within the root. Since hair dye doesn't get on the skin there's no way it can damage the root and cause more loss. If your hair is already weak then stick with an all over colour, but if your hair is strong but just thinning, don't worry about highlights. You'll get the same reaction you usually do from them - hair might be drier but a good conditioner or hair mask will help that :) I have really thick hair too but get it thinned on a regular basis so I don't look like a dandelion puff, hoping that after surgery if I have hair loss I can just stop getting it thinned and it will even out :p

Same here ... I have to get mine thinned often too. It is sooo thick and heavy that I am enjoying the thinning. As long as it stops before it gets TOO thin. lol
