5 Days Post Op...Is This Normal?

Hi Guys!

So I am on day 5 post op now and doing OK....a little tired but moving around relatively easily.  No pain meds required.

The only issue I am having is with water.  Everytime I take even the tiniest of sips I have pain!  It feels like an instant gas bubble in my tummy and then I burp and it's gone.  It can be sharp at times too! It's making me not want to drink water, which I know is a problem.

I tried some SF yogurt, cream soup and V8 juice and they all go down JUST FINE, so I am assuming the water is an issue because it's so thin and goes down faster????? I have no clue but it seems to be getting worse with each sip. Did anyone else experience this?  Gonna call the nurse today and see what she says, just wanted to ask here as well.

Thanks!!

Heather

Yup, I still have issues with plain water 3 weeks out. Try adding some Crystal Light or Dasani Drops, that's the only way I can ge****er in now!

Definitely, it feels like knives all the way down. I don't burp, it just feels like swallowing sandpaper. I read on here once that anything that breaks the surface tension of water makes it "softer" going down, so as someone else said lemon or cucumbers or lime is a good idea if Crystal Light doesn't appeal or gets boring

I had my surgery over a year ago, and I still cannot tolerate water, it just won't stay down!  Try any kind of herbal tea, a slice of lemon and sweetner with ho****er, mio, crystal light or watered down juice. Anything to make sure your getting enough fluids in to stay hydrated. Your not alone many people experience this, for some it's short term for others it's not.. I'm still hoping some day it agrees with me again!  Take Care!

Thanks for the tips guys....I will give it a try.  I'm currently sipping oatmeal mixed with skim milk and it's hurting too....feels like someone is stabbing me in the stomach within seconds of swallowing. Ouch!

I had issues with oatmeal too - even watered down it was too much for my pouch. Hurt, and then I got really bloated. I think for me the oats were too much to digest in the first week. Maybe try cream of wheat? I found first thing in the morning in the first week and a half, I had to have something like applesauce or cream soup for breakfast, anything that needed my stomach to work after "fasting" all night and the pouch would get mad, lol.

If it hurts, don't force it down, you never know what's going on inside!

I know exactly what that's like - I sometimes couldn't even muster up a burp - had to go for a walk to wretch it around one way or the other.  I know its really uncomfortable too.  Unfortunately I still get em - especially when I eat broccoli which I love and only two or three well cooked pieces will do it!  It is better now - after about five months, I think my stomach is a little bigger too but in the beginning it really hurts!
