Hello. I recently had the pleasure of meeting with someone who is considering GB to answer questions about my Gastric Bypass Surgery experiences. She had one question I couldn't answer; how does a Hypothyroid condition effect qualifying for or the success/outcome of RNY?

It should not as long as it is being treated. And I was also told having an RNY would probably have no effect on my medication dose. Michelle

As long as your hypothyroid condition is under control, it doesn't affect anything.  I have it, and went through fine.  You will be tested along the way for your levels, but you will still be on your thyroid medications.  Not even my dose has changed since surgery.

If your condition isn't controlled, you may have some issues.  But they will probably start the process and work with you to get it controlled.  It might delay surgery if there are problems with getting it under control, but I'm not even sure of that.

I suffer from ever changing levels of hypothyroid, a thing that my doctor and I did through out this process was tested levels approximately every 6 weeks just in case there was a need for dosage change. Also, I made sure thatI had   physical, and all my blood work up to date before I went to the nurse practitioner so that it saved them having to book a second appointment. (can slow the process down).

It doesn't. You will probably want your levels (TSH) checked more frequently the first yr post op. I needed my meds increased within the first 3 months post op. Others I know of had their bumpedd up too

Any existing medical conditions must be stable and under treatment.  I was on Synthroid pre-op and still take it post-op.  My dose was lowered a bit 1.5 years post-op.

No issues. I'm on meds and my GP will check it again soon to make sure it doesn't need to be adjusted. BUT.....I may need to have mine removed. I have a biopsy this Friday. My nodules are getting bigger. My results were inconclusive in September. It wasn't even a concern when it came to the surgery.
