What did your first sip of water feel like

I'm going in for surgery on Monday and I was wondering what the first drink of water after surgery feels like.

It was a bit like swallowing sand for me. Diluted apple juice went down much easier for the first week or so, for me. Good luck on Monday!!

Good luck!! Mine didn't go down well that's for sure. I felt very nauseated and had pain for quite a few days after surgery. The key is, drink, drink, but it can be easier said than done. I got so frustrated with everyone telling me to drink more. Ended up vomiting when I pushed the limits. I'm 4 weeks out as of tomorrow (tomorrow is the first day of real food YAY). Just so your best. Take tiny sops and swi**** around your mouth. Mine was SO dry the first day. I wish you the best of luck!

Everyone is different. I was so afraid to drink thinking that is was going to hurt. It didn't! It was more difficult in the sense that I was super cautious to only sip and it was constant sipping. I too mixed apple juice and it was nice to have some flavor.

Good luck with everything

My first day drinking felt like I had a rough, dry sore throat... except not in my throat, at the top of my stomach! Very strange. It wasn't that bad, so I drank all I could, and it got easier and easier. Personally I couldn't stand the diluted juice. I didn't have any and have only had diluted juice twice since surgery, when I was craving a taste of orange juice (something I used to drink all the time), and then I was just like "yeah, ok, not THAT worth it" (the cals). To get in all my water now (6 weeks out) I add Disani Drops and other milder flavourings. I used to be a Crystal Light fanatic, but I find it too sweet/strong. I have so much left though, I should try making it diluted.

My surgery was 8 a.m. By 5 p.m., I was able to drink diluted apple juice and a bit of beef broth for supper. The juice was much easier on my new tummy than water would have been.

To this day, 4+ months post-op, plain water still doesn't sit well in my stomach. I have to flavour it with something. So I keep about 8-10 different flavourings at home, at work, in my purse, etc. The only time I actually vomited post-op was with plain water. Test your tummy slowly and follow your doctor's plan, to make sure everything goes well for you. And remember that sometimes, unfortunately, plain water just won't work.

Wishing you luck for your surgery on Monday!

Water the first time hurt like crazy, but then all fluids hurt in the little "ROO" I named it. I still have some issues. I am 8 wks out and having problems with dry foods for some reason.  Good luck its normal for it to hurt at first, as it'sa whole new system..word of wise as much as u will want ICE WATER stray away from it and just drink room temp, or suck on ice. Ice cold water makes my tummy hurt and all I can say is it feels strange..I get a kind of gurgling sound like Im starving but no where near hungry.

You will be fine.

All the best

Tina
