High Risk for Colon Cancer

I have a high risk for colon cancer.  I have been screened frequently since I was 35 (20 years!)  A non-cancerous polyp was removed 7 years ago. My mother was a colon cancer survivor, operated on at age 59, and she lived to be 84.  A female cousin died at age 35, and another female cousin was operated on at age 72, and so far, so good.

Does anyone know if this will have a bearing on WLS?

Not necessarily but I would think it would be on a case-by-case basis. Unfortunately I don't have a link or two for you this morning, but there has been some research done in this respect.  I would discuss with your doctor and, when the time comes, your potential bariatric surgeon.

Thanks Karen.  I've seen recent stories about increased risk after WLS, and it sounds like post bypass.  I will speak to my doctor(s).

Hi,

Check out this article:

I am curious about it too, as I turned 50, and got the colon cancer kit from my doctor.

I got that one at that time too. Made me laugh as well. Got a second from my doc about a month ago, kinda tricky doing this, as I am 5 months out from surgery, and ahem, don't poop that often.

In doing some online research, it seems that Bypass can result in increased risk for colon cancer.  I will have to talk to my doctor(s) about this, and see if VSG is the better option for me.  I know that I do not make the final decision though.  I also have a C-Section scar, but my baby is now 29 years old.

Thanks for "weighing in" everyone!
