I had heard that they are moving, so they aren't doing surgeries in Sept/Oct.  Not sure if this is the reason or not

Question why do people need the sleep study ?

Does everyone do it and if not what make you qualify for it ?

HRRH has to fight for surgery spots so they have a huge waiting list as where TWH has been doing it much longer and has the process down to a science so they book 1-2 months out from meeting the surgeon.  Im not sure about the other places.  Dr. Starr is awesome, but HRRH is by far the slowest and most unorganized hospital I have ever had to deal with.

Just an FYI - TWH has not been doing bariatric surgery longer than Humber River.

When I was referred for surgery over 10 years ago, HRRH had Hagen, Klein, Starr was still fairly new to WLS and Sohi was just starting and Reed in Guelph was also operating. No one else, TWH wasn't even in the picture as they didn't join on until the inception of the Ontario Bariatric Network/Registry. There was no network/registry at that time.

There are several reasons as to why HRRH is "slow" and TWH is "fast" - operating time is a huge issue due to the sheer number and types of procedures performed there (being a regional hospital), the surgeons doing bariatrics are also surgical specialists and generalists and have a heavy caseload aside from WLS cases (for example, Hagen was the Chief of Laparoscopic Surgery and a cancer surgeon in addition to bariatrics and general surgeries), and HRRH operates out of one site.  TWH on the other hand is in the "University Network" and a patient may end up at TWH, TEGH, St. Mike's..... etc., with surgeons at each doing bariatrics.

K.

Edited to add: By the way, the expected wait time for WLS at that time was 5-7 years.
