Exercise?

Happy Thursday :)

I am one month post RNY tomorrow and really itching to exercise. The doctor confirmed no lifting/weight training until I see her again in August.

I would love to get back into something (cardio and bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, burpees, push ups) did anyone else start this after surgery? I really miss exercise (it was the one thing I have always loved), walking just isn't cutting it for me.

I was cleared for volleyball 6 weeks after. My doctor said I wasn't allowed to jump though for another 2 weeks. I'd be careful with the burpees etc. I'd stick to walking/cardio like exercise for now maybe.

I was advised against exercising the first two months - walking was fine but the doctor explained I wasn't eating enough calories to sustain the energy for a work out. Once I could get all your protein from my food and if you are feeling well enough and have enough energy, she told me I could start working out. I'm 3 months out and I'm walking, hiking, biking, also doing Aquafit and Zumba classes now.

Check with your WLS Support team or doctor to get directions what they suggest!

I imagine some cardio would be ok.

The nurses at TWH told me that many people they see return due to problems are people that tried sit ups too soon.

The reason for no exercise is to let your body heal. It looks fine on the outside, but there are lots of cuts and stitches healing up on the inside. If you had a big cut on your hand, would you start stretching it out before it completely closed up?

You will have the rest of your life to exercise. Right now you need to heal.

I just had a follow up with my surgeon on Monday. I am just over 5 weeks out and I asked him about this (elliptical specifically). He cleared me for exercise but said I have to make sure to keep hydrated if I going to sweat more. He said I wouldn't hurt anything in my tummy. I am not lifting weights or anything at this point. Just cardio.

Referral Nov 29, 2016: Orientation Jan 12, 2017: Nurse Feb 6, 2017: Dietitian and SW March 3, 2017: Trio April 5, 2017-cleared for surgery: Meet the Surgeon April 12, 2017: Post op Nutrition class May 8, 2017: RNY Surgery May 9, 2017
