Thank you! I'm going to start making positive changes now and not limit my servings yet and see where that takes me.

What clinic are you at? I was at Windsor - they weighed at nurse not orientation but weighed at every appointment after that - sw, dietician, doctors, surgical education class. I had gained five pounds between nurse and dietician - had kind of a mental flip out of omg I have to eat everything now that I won't be able to eat ever again over a six week period so I ordered out all the foods I wouldn't be able to. I had to lose that five pounds before the dietician would sign off. Bottom line don't lose too much now because you might need that wiggle room later if you regain a few pounds. Don't know if what I'm trying to say makes sense in writing.

Makes total sense. I'm at Hamilton. I think I'm just going to start making changes now (not diet) but healthy lifestyle choices and see where that takes me.

Good plan. The dieticians want to see that anyway so maybe it will make things smoother for you. I think the basics is they don't want you to gain from your first weight so if you go in a bit heavier and then start to diet at least you won't go above that number. Good luck!

I lost 45 lbs prior to Surgery. I just had my head in the game I guess.

I made the lifestyle changes, got rid of carbonated beverages, upped my protein, curbed the carbs, upped my fluid intake and got more active. I started tracking and really looking at what I was eating and how it was impacting my calorie and carb counts. It was truly shocking. I actually had put myself on 1200 calories a day. When I met with the Dietician, she said I was being too hard on myself and upped my calories to 1600 per day. It all worked.

I think I was so ready lose weight that I couldn't stand the thought of waiting 7 months or longer to actually lose weight so I just got on top of it and started.

Interestingly enough, when I met with the Nurse and Dietician at 6 weeks post op, I was given my "diet for life". It was so easy to transition to this as it's how I had been eating prior to surgery. There was no big shock or learning curve. I just got back to it.

Good Luck!

You get weighed in at your first appointment after orientation. And yes you are encouraged to lose weight while going thru the process. You meet with the dietician, with the nurse and counsellor who help you work on your eating habits. You are encouraged to track eating and limit certain foods. You are making a life change and they want to ensure you have the tools necessary to do it and succeed. From my first appointment to my surgery date I lost 20 lbs thru the process.

I'm going through Hamilton as well. Was only weighed once and that was when I saw the nurse. Other than that, Hamilton site encourages changing our habits beforehand to lessen the blow to our system post- op. Start tracking your food on fitness pal (or any other food tracker app). They don't necessarily ask for them but it at least shows you are motivated to make a change in your lifestyle.

enjoy the journey!

I was at TWH and wasn't weighed until I saw the nurse I did gain a bit over the next few months but my main motivator for surgery was the switch to mealtime insulin which tends to cause some weight gain in the first year, there big concern was that I keep my blood sugar levels and asthma under control so I could be healthy enough for surgery my starting BMI was 37 so I was concerned that if I lost too much weight I wouldn't qualify anymore. They assured me it didn't work that way and once I was in the program I was in.
