My center says no regular coffee ever, for life, after surgery. Decaf is allowed. This is because caffeine can increase your risk for ulcers.

However, every center is different. From what I've read, there's conflicting information out there about coffee, caffeine, and ulcers- whether there actually is a link between them, whether it's caffeine that causes ulcers, or whether it's something else in the coffee itself, in which case it's best to avoid regular AND decaf.

I'm not sure what the correct information is.

Best bet is to ask at your next follow-up appointment, if there's nothing in your booklet/binder.

I drink rivers of decaf everyday. On the rare occasion I do have a regular coffee, my stomach gets upset. Caffeine can also inhibit the uptake of iron and other nutrients. Guelph is a decaf forever Centre. I have gotten use to it and always ask for decaf, but if they don't serve decaf, desperate times call for desperate measures, lol. I also carry decaf single serve sleeves in my purse if I remember to replenish my stash. A girl needs her coffee.

I waited over 3 months. Then, I got an ulcer. LOL. I have no idea if it's linked. The ulcer is marginal (5 mm) and I still drink coffee. But I've been thinking lately maybe I should ween myself off it. For now, it's still just a thought. LOL

Who knows really though. This is such an individual process and because the centres differ so much, I think the decision has to be personal. See how you feel; be very self aware. And decide for yourself what is best :)

I drink both decaf coffee and decaf green tea. The caffeine withdrawal was minimal and only lasted a few days. I did try a Timmies coffee and it damn near killed my guts. I'll stick with the decaf.
