I am starting to have issues with bone thinning. I am 70 yrs old and 10 yrs out from surgery. It have been told to take 1500 mg of calcium a day. I am not sure our bodies can even absorb that much.

Is anyone else out there dealing with this?

Ask for a referral to a specialist. You may need infusions. I take 1000 of calcium citrate a day. Are you taking the right kind of calcium? It is hard to swallow the huge pills for me but I do the best I can.

1500 of calcium citrate is a typical recommended amount post op.
split into 3 doses for absorption.

it is not unusual to have osteoporosis at this age. You can talk to your doctor about bone builders

Make sure you take the calcium citrate with vitamin D to enhance absorption. There are some liquid versions of calcium citrate and vitamin D that I have found at health food stores. Tend to cost a bit more, but more pleasant than the "horse pills" as another poster aptly described them.

Hope things prove with this condition or at the least don't get worse.
