What is Price for OnQ Pump?
Dear Bonnie
Thank you also for your input. How do you decide where the pump can send the numbing agent? And, can it be directed to more than one area... in the case of having multiple type of surgeries? For ex.: If I am having the LBL, TT, pubic repair (I guess that's what you call it),muscles (AB's) repaired or tightened and lipo with whatever areas are applicable? ... Maybe in that case, I might have to take Demerol for the whole thing, or have the OnQ directed to the area that hurts the MOST...?!? Ya think? I wouldn't want to look like Medussa... LOL! LOL!
Well, thanks so much for your help. God Bless! Luv, kath allen

Hi Kath. I had the OnQ pump and it was inserted in the area of my TT. How it works is there are two wires with what looks like a tiny flat triangle ( I watched while they pulled it out when it was done) at the end of each wire that is inserted into the surgical area. They are pulled out once the pump is empty. Mine were positioned where my muscle repair was done, so you do not have a choice as to where to send the medicine. The surgeon positions it where he feels it will benefit you with the numbing agent. It is designed to send the numbing agent to the area on its own, but you will have a button to push that sends a premeasured additonal dose if you need it to the area. You cannot overdo it though as it is designed to prevent you from doing that. The OnQ plus your pain meds that will be prescribed will make you very comfortable, believe me. My pain pump lasted 4 days.

Yes, I just had the thighs & butt done and I had 2 pumps directed at 4 areas. I do not know the cost as they were included in my price. They are great for the pain but a pain in the rear (LOL) because they get tangled up in the drainage tubes. My belly is still numb from the first set of procedures about 4 months ago, I had the On-Q there with the arms boobs and belly all being done at once. I think it is the Drs choice where the numbing agent should go?? Doesn't hurt to ask though? AMY
I asked my surgeon to explain since the price was kind of on the high side ($750) and he explained to me that you can "fill" the pump with different quantities of the drug (marcaine) which can last 3 - 5 days. Mine lasted 5 days and I had two "tubes" (He told me the proper name for these but I can't remember!) inserted into the area where the muscle repair was done.
My ps explained that OnQ sells the pumps to the surgeons as reusable OR one-time use. My ps utilizes the one time use pump and then pay extra for the larger quantity of meds and the extra "tubes".
I have heard that some people have a slower heart rate while on this pump and it did happen to me. Has this happened to anyone else?

Demerol pumps leave me groggy , and the side reaction I have to demerol or morphine pump is that I cannot pee with it in my system. It causes urinary retention which is not a rare side effect.
Demerol is a very poor pain reliever, has many side effects, ie nausea, headaches etc. 50 mg of Demerol had an equal pain relief effect of 2 tylenol.
If you are going to have a narcotic pump you would be better off with Morphine or Dilaudid.
Even better - oral pain pills, such as Lortab, Vicodin, Norco, Percocets, or Darvocet N-100, or even a liquid Lortab.
