So i took an hpt today because im 5 days late and got a faint positive. I will retest in the morning but im wondering if all post op pregnancies are high risk? Im 4 months out and down almost 110 lbs with about 55 more to go. What should i do and avoid (foods, exercise, etc)

I'm 13 months out and 9 weeks pregnant. Cravings are hard to avoid. Crackers are the only thing that helps my nausea. Eating protein makes it worse. I'm up a few lbs. need to get waking again but it gives me cramps.

Late to the party, but I'll chime in anyway.

First off, congrats!!!

I went with a regular OBGYN, no need for a high-risk specialist. You may need a specialist if you have trouble with your blood sugar, but there's no reason to automatically assume there will be a lot of risk.

A lot of the recommendations and things to avoid are similar to non-WLS pregnant ladies, but here's what I recall:

RECOMMENDED:

  • See if you can find an OB with experience with WLS patients. My OB had dealt with a few RNY patients before and it was really helpful that she knew what to expect.
  • Meet with your surgeon early on to get some baseline blood work done.
  • Make sure you keep up on your supplements, and run them past your surgeon and/or OB. If you add a separate folic acid pill to your regular vitamins, you'll be fine. It's risky to double up on prenatals because too much vitamin A can be risky for the baby, but bariatric supplements are above and beyond what "normal" pregnant women are advised to take.
  • Exercise as much as you can, even if it's something like walking. Stay away from the weightlifting, but keep as much of your routine as you safely can!
  • Stay hydrated. You'll be peeing allllllllll the time, especially later on, but it's especially important not to get dehydrated.
  • Let yourself give in to cravings, just be sensible about it. I let myself have carbs while pregnant because I craved PB&J and shredded mini-wheats, both of which were off-limits while losing after surgery. My surgeon said those were fine to have once a day.

AVOID (the usual preggo stuff):

  • Alcohol, smoking, etc.
  • Too much caffeine
  • Rare or uncooked meats
  • Fish with mercury in it, like tuna steak
  • Lunchmeat and hot dogs (due to food poisoning risk and preservatives)

Hang in there, you can do it! :)
