Revision from Lap Band to RNY

Hi,

I had the lap band in 2008. I never lost more than 30 pounds, starting at 220. Then I had terrible burning in my chest and had to have it unfilled. Gained it all back plus 20. Now I'm considering the bypass, mostly because of the GERD that could come with the sleeve. However, the bypass scares me to death. Also, I'm concerned about nutritional deficiencies in the long term.

If you are someone who has had a revision from lab band to RNY (preferably in one surgery as that's how my surgeon does it), I would like to hear how it went for you and why you chose that surgery and not the sleeve.

I would also love to hear from long term bypass people about their long term complications particularly related to nutritional deficiencies. Is there a way to avoid these?

Thanks so much everyone!

You and I are in similar boats . I am currently awaiting insurance approval for the revision .I was nervous about the bypass too but ultimately decided it's the most effective , most foolproof out there .I can not risk doing the sleeve and having issues. Mentally , physically and financially I feel bypass is best for me . Good luck .

Good luck Kimiam. Let's stay in touch since we may have surgery around the same time.

I love my bypass! No complications. within a week or two felt normal for the first time in 11 years. Amazing feeling. I had it in one procedure. Sleeve was absolutely off the table for me because of GERD. doc said odds were high I'd end up revising to RNY anyway...so that was a no brainer.

Deficiencies are not a concern for me I get regular blood tests, am religious with my vitamins and actually had to cut back on some because i was too high.

Could not recommend it more.

I am in the same boat except my surgeon is advising to go the sleeve route and I'm seriously wondering if it is the right idea. So stressful!

I think it depends if you have acid reflux. Since I already had it, he said the sleeve could make it worse. He didn't want me to have a third surgery.
