Hi, I'm like 1-2 months out from surgery.  Has any had rny surgery and also have low potassium before having the surgery.  I'm trying to still deceide between the gastric bypass and the vertical sleeve.  I know the sleeve does not mess with your absorbation of your medicines such as my potassium.  I was just wondering if I have the rny if my potassium would suffer due to not being able to absore as much and the other type of surgery.  Need some suggestions.  I'm seeing the nutr Wednesday.  Thanks.

Now how far do you have to drive for this appointment?  I bet you are happy he has moved his practice to Herrin.  Is it the same for the nutritionist?

Sorry, I don't have any advice about the potassium.  I don't understand what causes the problem, you will need professional advice on how to make the best decision for you.  What I can tell you is that some of the problems I had before surgery are gone.  I have only had leg cramps during the night one time since surgery!  Keep me posted how things are going.

Are you on any fluid pills like HCTZ or Lasix that cause low potassium? Low potassium is not typically found in RNY patients, so it makes me wonder if you are on a med that causes it.  I am a nurse, BTW. If that is the case, as you lose weight, you will not need fluid pills and then you will no longer have low potassium----problem solved. You will see an immediate shift in fluid levels after RNY, so it would resolve quickly.

My pottassium dipped after surgery - and I had to take supplements for a couple of weeks to get it back up - so pottasium is impacted.    I know some people have needed IV infusions for pottassium.        Now that I'm further out - the occasional banana seems to take care of it.

Good luck

Do you mean you are 1-2 month from having WLS surgery? Or did you have surgery for something else and you are 2 months out from that surgery?...Vertical sleeve is not covered by health insurances for the most part. Did you check with your insurance yet to make sure it is covered?  Maybe you are self pay..Sorry i didn't think about that.. Your Nut may help you make the decision. Mine helped me make mine. I wish you the best.. Hopefully I am 1-2 months away from having my surgery. Alizka

1st goal to be under 200. Done!  2nd goal to be just obese. Third goal is to be under 170 by Thanksgiving 2009. I Pray I can make it. I know the Lord will help me through this.

vertical sleeve is covered by my insurance.... so I guess it just depends on your work and your insurance...

On the potassium thing.  I don't think ( or rather, don't know) if I had a potassium problem pre-op.  I know that it never showed up on my pre-op blood work.  The other night, I had a kidney stone and when they did the blood work, my K was low so I had to go on a potassium IV drip.  I am still not sure what triggered this.
