I'd never even heard that we can't take the pill. I use the Nuva Ring and had it in even during my surgery.

There is some concern that the pill may not work as well because it may be malabsorbed and some doctors recommend a back up along with it.

I got the Depo shot 3 years after surgery so I'm not sure that you'll have the same experience being fresh out of surgery (soon).  But, it made me unbelievably hungry.   My stomach never growled after surgery until I got the shot and then I was constantly hungry.   I also had a non-stop period for a month.  Which, I was told, is something that also can happen to some.

I've heard of others with the same issues and then there are those that never experience this.   I guess it just depends on the individual.

I stopped the shots, though, and opted for Mirena IUD.

I also used NuvaRing for a while and like it but unfortunately I was allergic to the latex it was made from.   I ended up with infection after infection until I stopped using it.

one of the reasons some surgeons wont allow patients to use the pill is that it can increase your risk of blood clots. If your surgeon says you can have it then i guess all you can do is trust him or her. But i would def make sure that your surgeon is ok with it and not just your gyn. My gyn gave me a med she swore would be fine 3 weeks before my surgery. I called my surgeon before taking it and it was a good thing since if i had taken it he wouldnt have done my surgery. I personally have  a Mirena IUD. I iused the depo shot when i was younger and between that and my freshman year of college i put on a good 100 lbs. Plus if i did not get the shot exactly a week before the three months was up i was miserable. Cramps so bad i could barely get out of  bed extream heavy bleeding...it also messed up my entire cycle after i stopped taking it and leached the calcuim fro my bones and teeth causing some extreme issues.
