We did a road trip when I was 2 weeks post-op.  (My surgeon didn't want me to fly - which would have been more comfortable AND, I don't understand because so many people travel for surgery.)  Anywhoo.... we stopped so I could walk 15 minutes every 2 hours.  It was actually very easy to incoporate into a road trip -- just alternated gas & potty stops.  I wasn't uncomfortable.  Packed a cooler with RTD shakes and easy pureed foods.

I didn't travel that soon after surgery, but I would think it is doable. I don't think you'll have any problems physically, but you will need to do some pre-planning to make sure you have food you can eat for your trip. Depending on where you are in your food plan then, it might be difficult to eat at restaurants, so you will probably need to take food with you. For me, at a minimum I'd take premixed protein shakes, bottled water, greek yogurt, reduced-fat cheese, and small cans of tuna. You will want to take the foods that work best for you. Taking along a cooler and staying at a motel with a min-fridge and ideally a microwave would make things much easier.

One thing to make sure you do is stop every 2-3 hours and get out of the car and walk. It will really reduce the risk of developing blood clots.

Good luck and happy travels!

I was on full liquids for the first month.  You can take a cooler and take ready to drink protein, ready made sugar free puddings and jello with  you.  If you take protein powder, premeasure it and put it in zip lock bags.  Take some Swiss Miss 25 cal hot choc and mix with protein powder.  I have an electric tea kettle that I take for travel to boil ho****er - I can make hot protein drinks, hot herbal or decaf tea or coffee, oatmeal, packaged broth, etc.

Take plenty of bottled water and any crystal light or whatever you flavor your water with.  You can also order goTein protein packs online.  They pour into a bottle of water.  Shake and you have a ready to drink protein ready.  There are other single serving protein packets also available from About Time (mixes really well) and their flavors are great.

Since you are driving and can have a cooler - there are many options.  Make sure you stop every hour or so and walk as bloot clots can still be an issue.  Get all liquid in as dehydration is the most frequent complication that sends post ops to the ER, and get all your protein in.  You may need a pillow and blanket to sleep in the back seat.  You will tire really easily.

Liquid, protein, supplements, walking and rest.  That should be your agenda.  Best wishes.

You'll be perfectly fine! I drove with just me and my four year old from Houston, TX to Phoenix, AZ in two days four weeks after my surgery.  I drove for 12 hours one day and 8 hours the next and a week later went back to Houston...I was exhausted but I just made sure I had plenty of foods packed in a cooler I could eat and plenty of water.  Have fun!!

I am actually going on a plane next Sunday April 3rd (4 weeks after surgery). But the flight is at 8pm so hopefully by then I will have all my protein in. Unfortunately I guess I will have to buy a $5.00 bottle of water once I get thru security. Physically you should be fine.
