Possible to get stricture after 6 years?

Hi all -- it's been a long time since I've been on the boards.  I am having some difficulty now, though, and wanted to ask for suggestions.  On Friday evening I ate a bite of pot roast and evidently didn't chew properly since I could feel it get stuck.  This has happened once or twice before so I didn't worry much about it, just stopped eating and waited.  Here it is not Monday afternoon, however, and I am still having pain in my chest (where the "stuck" feel was) and cannot even drink liquids without pain at the "stuck" area in the chest.  I've not tried any solids at all, but just liquids for the last three days.  Anyone have any suggestions or ideas or should I just call my surgeon (which I HATE to do since I haven't seen him in about 4 years -- my regular GP oversees all my labs and such).  Thanks!

I doubt you'd get a stricture six years out but it sounds like something is wrong.  You probably  need an upper GI.  Your GP could order one if you'd rather call  him than your surgeon.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

Papaya enzyme. You can find it in the spice section of a grocery store. In a pinch, use meat tenderizer.

Put a teaspoon or so into some water and drink it. That may help.

Good luck!!!!

You can technically get a stricture any time. Even those who have not had surgery can get an esophageal stricture from irritation causeing a build up of scar tissue or a medical condition called a schotzky ring. It is easy to diagnose and fix with an EGD. I hope all is well and you are on the mend very quickly.

Stictures can happen this far out but they are rare.

Pot roast is the worse thing for me, I've gotten stuck on it and had to throw up several times.  I try to avoid it now at all cost.

Papaya enzymes seem to help when I get stuck, they are chewable.  I usually chew 4-6 at one time and start walking then burping and about 20 minutes later I get some relief.  You might want to try this and then do liquids only for a couple of days.  IF you don't get relief soon please call your surgeon or go to the ER.
