GAS!

I woke up yesterday feeling like I may pop, I was "distended" and in a lot of pain.  I could hear and feel the gas "rolling" around in my abdoman and felt awful.  I actually called my surgeon and he told me to back off the protein shakes, (no problem, they taste GOD awful now) and do a day of clear liquids.  It helped!  I farted a few times and felt slightly human.  Today I started the day with maybe 4 bites of oatmeal and then some mint tea, and then some water with flavoring.  I'm not ready to pop, but I feel gas rolling around again.

I have not pooped yet, and feel no urge to whatsoever.  I plan on taking MOM tonight, hopefully tomorrow.

So, I'm guessing  my pouch is still extra sensitive.  Should I keep baby-ing myself, or try another brand of protein drink?  I have one that is lactose free, will that be okay to try?

Any suggestions will be helpful!

Happy Easter!

A lot of folks end up being lactose intolerant after the surgery so it couldn't hurt to try it.   Are you doing a lot of walking too?

Had my surgery on the 19th of April and like you have not gone for No. 2 yet.
I couldn't take much of the protien shakes, had half for breakfast and another half for dinner 2 days ago but couldn't do more. I think it gets better with time. So far I am comfortable with soup and Plain yogurt. Didn't have any Gas episodes.

Let me know how you are doing. It's good to know someone who had it around the same time so we can compare notes.

I'm not really sure if it's  a good idea to take the MOM just yet.  I would call and ask your surgeon's office first.  With the pre-surgery diet and not much in your tummy since, you shouldn't need to poop just yet.  I would definately ask first....

Gas for me was normal for several weeks and it just had to come out regardless. The poop thing didnt come until day 7 for me. I didnt get any protein shakes the first week or oatmeal only clear liquids-popsicles, water, broth, etc. My dr didnt want any digestion going on that first week while the intial healing was beginning. I had zero problems with this plan but following it was a livign hell but I made it through. On day 7 I got to the full liquids-mashed potatoes, oatmeal, and yogarts that was a bit easier to follow and still no problems. For me the longer I go without digestion the better. I am about to start 7 weeks out, I have had no problems, no dumping, and no issues related to surgery. Other than unable to eat more than a cup now I have no indications that I have even had surgery other than being lactose intolerant now. It is hard to do staying as simple with your diet as long as you can seems to pay off in the long run without complications and pain. Good luck to you.

Hi all, I had my revision from lap band to gastric bypass surgery on 4/18/11. I am 6 days post op- and happy that i have not experienced the gas issues like i did with the lap band. I am taking gas X -2x per MD suggestion. Hate crystal light now seems too sweet.Does any one else have this issue. I am determined to not fail this time so attempting to follow the rules exactly how they are written for me. Currently i am on a full liquid diet for 2weeks and wish i could eat oatmeal, i have take a table spoon of Greek yogurt and added it to my protein shake but still don't have the taste buds for it. I get scared bc i know the protein is important for rebuilding the body. this wasn't an issue with the Lap Band wonder y with this surgery. How does a person get the required water and protein in if your full and not hungry. when u find a brand of protein drink that is pleasing pls let me now. I cant wait until the puree phase b/c it will allow me to get more variety and protein in my body. I have this new blender (magic bullet) and ready to use it. good luck to all my troopers we will make it through.

I can't stand Crystal Light now either. I try to find mixes with sucralose, Splenda, Stevia, etc. I just can't stand aspartame now. I do love the MiO water enhancers. Just be careful to not over squirt the flavor! LOL.

As far as protein...I can't stand most of them. I just keep trying more and more. To get them down, I mix a scoop into 2oz of water and do it as a shot instead of a full drink. Still gross, but quicker. I've also mixed the Unjury Unflavored protein into jello to get more.

Good luck!

I also had surgery on the 20th.  I am feeling extra gassy too.  I have been able to do a lot of burping which is helping.  I haven't tried protein shakes yet because cream soups and cream of wheat made with milk are the foods suggested for the first two weeks.  I have been lucky because I have been able to "go" the last 3 days.  Good luck to you!

I had RNY on Wednesday. I have been on clear liquids until today and have had minimal issues with bloating. I started full liquids today with 4 oz of pureed soup.
Protein shakes can have soy which can cause excess gas, and some of us become lactose intolerant after surgery. Try lactaid when you drink the shakes and only consume max of 4oz at any one time.
I had my 1st BM this morning while sipping warm chammomile tea, sitting on the toilet and reading a book. Sorry for the detail, but I think the solution is warm tummy and intestines in a relaxed setting. I had no sensation of needing to go, but thought I would give it a try. Voila!
I would avoid trying any medication, even over-the-counter MOM, before talking with your surgeon, not your regular MD, but your surgeon. They know the most about what is going on related to your body right now.
Be patient, don't rush the food phases, and let yourself heal.  I feel great and I am taking everything slow, except walking. I am up and about and feel great.
